Manchester United beat Chelsea 40 to ruin Frank Lampard's debut as a Premier League coach in their season-opening game on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford scored twice, Anthony Martial grabbed another and substitute Daniel James completed the rout on his debut, but it was also an impressive defensive performance from United with the world's most expensive defender, Harry Maguire, playing his role in keeping the visitors at bay.

Maguire, who completed his 80 million pound ($97 million) transfer from Leicester last Monday, played from the start on his United debut.

Chelsea dominated possession, twice hit the post and had more efforts on goal, but the visitors were picked apart by counterattacks with United midfielder Paul Pogba showing his importance to the side with two assists.

Tammy Abraham struck the left post early on for Chelsea, which had Mateo Kovacic involved in the thick of the action early on. The Croat also set up Pedro's effort almost straight afterward.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga easily gathered Martial's effort after the French winger was gifted the ball by defender Kurt Zouma, whose day was about to get worse.

While Chelsea looked confident, the side had a blow when Zouma brought Rashford down with a clumsy challenge in the 17th. Rashford took his time before sending the resulting penalty to the top left corner.

Momentum switched as Chelsea looked rattled by the setback. Martial continued to probe, having a shot blocked after good work from Pogba.

The visitors recovered toward the end of the half, when Ross Barkley had an effort saved and Emerson was the next to hit the post.

Chelsea maintained its pressure in the second half, when Emerson drew a smart save from David de Gea.

Christian Pulisic came on for his Chelsea debut in the 58th and the American was given a tough welcome to the Premier League when his run was stopped abruptly by Pogba's shoulder.

United defended in numbers, frustrating the visitors' attack, and its second goal started with Maguire at the back after the 26year-old won the ball from Abraham. Andreas Pereira crossed for Martial to convert from close range in the 65th, and Chelsea was still recovering when Pogba floated the ball over and Rashford went through in the 67th for 3-0.

Pogba set up James to make it 40 in the 81st with a deflected shot taking the ball past Kepa.

Arsenal starts its EPL season with 1-0 win at Newcastle

Arsenal's club-record signing Nicolas Pépé watched as PierreEmerick Aubameyang scored to give his team a 1-0 win at Newcastle in their Premier League opening game on Sunday.

Aubameyang, who had been threatening intermittently in a game of few chances, finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when he stopped Ainsley Maitland-Niles' cross with his first touch and dinked it past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka with his next.

Substitute Pépé, who joined from French side Lille for 72 million pounds ($87 million) on Aug. 1, was given a warm welcome from Arsenal fans when he made his debut in the 71st.

"Physically he needs to get his best fitness to be ready to play 100% for 90 minutes. I think that today 20 minutes is good for him," Arsenal coach Unai Emery said.

Spain midfielder Dani Ceballos came on in the 64th to make his Arsenal debut.

Newcastle made the better start in Steve Bruce's first Premier League game in charge of his hometown club, albeit without creating a glut of goal chances. Club record signing Joelinton went close with a header in the 17th minute of his debut. Paraguay forward Miguel Almirón was booked for a dive shortly afterward, before Jonjo Shelvey had two efforts blocked and Joelinton another shot saved.

At the other end, Aubameyang, twice flagged offside already, finally stayed on to take Henrikh Mkhitaryan's through ball and draw a smart save.

Aubameyang was denied early in the second half after a fine ball forward from Granit Xhaka, but there was little the goalkeeper could do to stop the Gabon forward grabbing the winner.

"Today we struggled but we deserved it," Emery said. "I am happy but we calm down to train tomorrow."

There was a buzz of excitement around St. James' Park when Allan Saint-Maximin came on in the 67th for his Newcastle debut. The French forward, given the No. 10, immediately whipped in a dangerous cross, deflected out for a corner.

Jetro Willems also came on for his Newcastle debut, while Brazilian defender Gabriel Martinelli came on late for the visitors.

Arsenal midfielders Mesut Özil and Sead Kolasinac, who were targeted by armed thieves in north London last month, did not feature after the club said Friday there were "further security incidents."

Emery said he didn't yet know if the pair would be available for Arsenal's next game at home to Burnley on Saturday.

VAR denies Wolves in 0-0 Premier League opener at Leicester

Wolverhampton Wanderers had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Leicester City in the Premier League after VAR intervened to disallow Leander Dendoncker's strike on Sunday.

The visitors thought they'd taken the lead six minutes into the second half but video replays showed Dendoncker's initial header struck teammate Willy Boly's arm before coming back to the Belgian.

Both sides struggled to create chances of note, though Wolves might have won with better finishing from Portuguese forward Diogo Jota.

Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers opted for Caglar Soyuncu to fill the gap left by Harry Maguire's 80-million pound ($97 million) departure for Manchester United. Soyuncu had little trouble as both sides nullified each other.

Leicester dominated possession but Jamie Vardy had little involvement until Youri Tielemans' cross shot across the six-yard box in the 38th. The former England striker failed to get a touch.
