Aritz Aduriz’s late acrobatic screamer denies Barcelona in La Liga opening match
Barcelona lost its opening Spanish league match for the first time in a decade on Friday, falling at Athletic Bilbao 1-0.
Veteran striker Aritz Aduriz scored the winner with a spectacular scissor-kick a minute after coming off the bench in the 88th minute, handing Barcelona the loss after 10 straight wins to start the league.
Antoine Griezmann couldn't make up for Lionel Messi's absence. Griezmann was held scoreless in his competitive debut after joining from rival Atlético Madrid in the offseason. He didn't have Messi by his side because the Argentina star is nursing a right calf injury, and he couldn't count on Luis Suárez either after the Uruguay striker had to be replaced because of an injury in the first half at San Mamés Stadium.
Barcelona had most of the significant chances, being denied by the woodwork a few times.
Bayern held 2-2 at home by Hertha in Bundesliga opener
Amid reports that Brazilian winger Philippe Coutinho was to join the club, Bayern Munich was held to 2-2 by Hertha Berlin in the opening game of the Bundesliga on Friday.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice for the seven-time defending champion, but Bayern failed to make the most of its chances and will rue the setback after Hertha capitalized on two mistakes to score twice in a threeminute period.
Bayern coach Niko Kovac congratulated counterpart Ante Covic after making his league debut in charge of the visitors.
Lewandowski did not have to wait long before opening his league account in the 24th minute, sliding in to convert Serge Gnabry's cross after Joshua Kimmich was given plenty of space to surge through the middle.
A rout looked possible as Hertha's defense continued to look shaky, but Dodi Lukebakio struck against the run of play in the 36th for the visitors, the Belgian's shot from distance taking a big deflection off Vedad Ibisevic's back to give Manuel Neuer no chance.
Marko Grujic stunned the home fans when he made it 2-1 three minutes later, winning a duel against Benjamin Pavard before running onto a through ball from Ibisevic and rounding Neuer to score.
"A bit surprising," Germany coach Joachim Löw said of the halftime scoreline.
Bayern started the second half as it had the first, before VAR intervened after Grujic dragged Lewandowski's shirt from behind and the striker fell.
Lewandowski dusted himself off to equalize from the spot on the hour-mark.
Barcelona: 'Initial agreement' to loan Coutinho to Bayern
Barcelona says it is in negotiations to loan playmaker Philippe Coutinho to Bayern Munich.
Barcelona's director of institutional relations says there is "an initial agreement" for the transfer, but it hasn't been finalized yet.
Guillermo Amor made the comment on Friday before Barcelona opened its Spanish league campaign at Athletic Bilbao.
The 27-year-old Coutinho was not included in the squad for the team's opener.
Coutinho failed to live up to expectations after joining Barcelona in 2017 for a club-record transfer from Liverpool worth 160 million euros (then $192 million).
The Brazil playmaker scored 21 goals in 75 appearances for the Catalan club but was criticized by fans for not playing his best in decisive games.
Lyon routs Angers 6-0 to continue Sylvinho's winning start
Memphis Depay and Moussa Dembelé both scored twice as Lyon won again in the French league under new coach Sylvinho by routing Angers 6-0 on Friday.
Houssem Aouar opened the scoring from outside the penalty area in the 11th minute, Dembelé scored in the 37th after cutting inside a defender, and Depay grabbed his first before the break.
The Dutch forward scored his second after beating the offside trap, Dembelé made it 5-0 in the 65th, and Brazilian midfielder Jean Lucas came on as a substitute to complete the scoring in the 72nd.
Lyon, which lost several top players in the offseason including World Cup winner Nabil Fekir, Tanguy Ndombele, and Ferland Mendy, has a new coaching setup in Sylvinho and sporting director Juninho.
The side opened its league account with a 3-0 win over Monaco last week. La Liga
