-

The ever popular Burmarrad edition of the House of Sport 10k Series saw increased participation on Sunday, when nearly 300 athletes took part in the flat and fast route, which had to be altered slightly from previous years due to ongoing road works.

Dillon Cassar set the pace from the word go, leading the way with a comfortable advantage. Cassar, who has only appeared on the running scene a little less than two years, has certainly been leaving his mark.

Cassar kept the gap throughout the two lap course and clocked a time of 31 minutes 48 seconds. Another strong performance was delivered by Stefan Azzopardi, who after an absence of four months due to injury returned to road racing.

Azzopardi finished in second place in a time of 34 minutes and 36 seconds. In third place, twelve seconds behind Azzopardi was Mario Grech, who tailed Azzopardi for most of the race.

Roberta Schembri took the lead in the females race, starting off with a good gap ahead of Josann Attard Pulis, Despite valiant attempts from Attard Pulis to narrow the gap Schembri kept her pace to win the race in 38 minutes 7 seconds. Attard Pulis settled for second place, 43 seconds behind Schembri. In third place was Joelle Cortis who registered a time of 39 minutes 7 seconds.

A minute of silence was held out of respect for Mario Tabone, an athlete who had passed away suddenly a few days before the race.

The Race was held under the auspices of the Malta Amateur Athletics Association and supported by House of Sport, Starmax and emvigee pr & marketing. The next race on the House of Sport 10k Series will be held on Sunday 8th December and will take place in Valletta.
