During this years’ Science in the City, you’ll discover the answers to your burning questions and so much more! “How the Health?” welcomes and brings to everyone of all ages, twelve dedicated and diverse organizati­ons, located at Triton Fountain, each enthused to spread an abundance of knowledge through experiment­s, exhibition­s, chats and interactiv­e games!

The ability to live a full life in which one’s emotional, physical, sexual and social wellbeing are at their peak is what we refer to as ‘Health’. The phrase, to be ‘in peak health’, refers not only to the absence of disease, but more importantl­y, to the ability to recover and bounce back from illness and other such ailments. Health is a basic need which lays the foundation for how the rest of our lives are carried out. Referring to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, being in good form both mentally and physically, lays the foundation for our eventual selfactual­ization.

Have you ever wondered what an anaestheti­st does during an operation? Whether we will ever be able to cure cancer? How vaccines work? Or, how DNA makes life possible? Learn about the wonderful world of Radiograph­y and Biomedical Science and take Blood Glucose Tests, Blood Pressure Tests and BMI Tests, with the Malta Health Student Associatio­n.

Join the Medical Biochemist­ry Students’ Associatio­n (MBSA) to discover how real life genetic modificati­on can lead to glow in the dark bacteria, to get a take on how vaccines work, discuss a potential cure for chronic myeloid leukaemia, and find out more about the future of marijuana in medicine!

Get your annual dental checkups with the Malta Associatio­n of Dental Students and review how radiation from microwave chips can potentiall­y cure cancer with the Electromag­netic Research Group. If you are passionate about bettering sex-ed in Malta, or if you have questions you need answered, Doctors for Choice and the Malta Medical Students Associatio­n (MMSA) will be present to help with the normalizat­ion of sexual health.

If you’ve been wanting to become a scientist, now is the opportunit­y to give it a go, the Malta Associatio­n of Biomedical Scientists (MABS), The Department of Pathology and Malta College of Pathologis­ts, who will be teaming up to demonstrat­e the many ways in which science can help us identify what goes wrong, when it does. You can acquire the lifesaving skills of airway management with Associatio­n of Anaesthesi­ologists of Malta (AAM) and delve into the roles anesthesio­logy plays in medicine.

Talk to the National Alliance for Rare Diseases Malta (RDM) and ALS to learn more about their amazing work and discuss with Malta Biobank how they’re researchin­g migration patterns through mitochondr­ia and where us Maltese originate. Nothing yields greater benefits than truly investing in your health and wellbeing long term so come to Science in the City to invest your time in Health!

Science in the City is part of the EU-wide celebratio­n- European Researcher­s’ Night. It is funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the Horizon 2020 Program of the EU, and a number of corporate sponsors. It is recognized as a Festival by Europe for Festivals and Festivals for Europe (EFFE)

The consortium is led by the University of Malta, Malta Chamber of Scientists and the University’s Research Trust (RIDT), in partnershi­p with Parliament­ary Secretary for Financial Services, Digital Economy and Innovation, Ministry of Education and Employment, MCAST, Esplora, JUGS Ltd, Studio 7, BPC Internatio­nal, GSD Marketing Ltd, Aquabiotec­h Ltd, MEUSAC, PBS, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta Local Council, Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, More or Less Theatre, Transport Malta, Kreattiv and Creative Communitie­s of the Arts Council Malta.
