Enjoy the fascinating autumn bird migration with BirdLife Malta!
Autumn raptor migration over the Maltese Islands is now at its peak. These are some of the the birds of prey which have been migrating over the Maltese Islands in the past days.
Most of these species – which include the usual birds of prey such as Marsh Harriers, Honey Buzzards and Black Kites – are regularly observed by the hundreds of birders who at this time of year congregate at Buskett, Malta’s largest woodland, to enjoy the wonderful spectacle provides in the skies by these large birds while they are crossing over Malta on their migration journeys to their wintering spots.
Do you want to witness this fascinating natural spectacle first-hand? BirdLife Malta will be giving the public the opportunity to enjoy this spectacle too thanks to an event being held at Buskett during the first weekend of October.
Families are being invited to join BirdLife Malta birdwatchers and bird ringers for EuroBirdwatch19 which is a two-day celebration of autumn bird migration. Activities will start on Saturday, 5 October at BirdLife Malta’s Għadira Nature Reserve where the public can do some birdwatching for migrating birds and also attend bird ringing demonstrations which will be held at the Mellieħa reserve in the morning. For these one has to reserve a place since spaces are limited. Two sessions are being held: one between 7.30am and 8.30am, and the other between 8.45am and 9.45am. Booking details can be found in the event link below.
The following day, Sunday 6th the eNGO will be holding guided birdwatching sessions for families at Buskett, Malta’s best spot to see migrating birds of prey. On this day families can turn up any time they want between 2pm and 7pm. There will also be activities for children on site. Directions to the birdwatching spot can be found in the event webpage below.
This initiative is the largest annual event of the BirdLife partnership which is held across Europe every year at the start of autumn. EuroBirdwatch is organised by BirdLife Europe & Central Asia, with many of the partners in the BirdLife family – including BirdLife Malta – participating in a series of events which are held at the same time across the continent. During the weekend hundreds of local birdwatchers across different European countries will be identifying and counting passing birds and BirdLife Malta will also contribute
Malta’s numbers.
