PD thanks MPs who resigned from the party
Partit Demokratiku yesterday expressed its gratitude to Godfrey Farrugia and Marlene Farrugia for their unconditional dedication and invaluable contribution to the party and to Malta.
The pair, elected on behalf of PD in 2017, have resigned from the party and will not be contesting the next election.
“PD has no doubt that their work in the best interest of our country will continue in earnest as MPs,” the party said in a statement.
Partit Demokratiku “will continue fighting for Malta and the preservation and enhancement of its democracy according to its principles and vision.
“We remain a party open to all those who have Malta’s best interest at heart,” PD said.
On Sunday, Godfrey and Marlene Farrugia said they had resigned to make way for new people. In a letter to the PD executive, the MPs said they had always taken political decisions in a spirit of loyalty towards the country.
“We need to ensure that the country remains democratic, where the rule of law and social justice remain the main pillars of politics. In order for democracy to stay alive, there needs to be a political force that brings together all movements that share a vision of sustainable economics, a social and environmental vision, and respect towards humanity.”
The Farrugias said they believe that the PD can evolve further, even if it is rebuilt from scratch, and become the party that the country truly needs, giving the electorate a better choice at the next general elections.
In order for the party to evolve, it needs to have people who are relatively new to the political scene and distance itself from established parties.
