Malta Weightlift­ing Associatio­n organises #BEACTIVE Competitio­n

The Malta Weightlift­ing Associatio­n has yet again more news as the #BEACTIVE Competitio­n was organised last Saturday evening at the Kirkiop Sports complex. The activity was aimed towards showing off the sport and give spectators a taste of what a weightlift­ing competitio­n is like.

This time round, 4 teams were formed made up in a mix of both 7 female and male athletes of different age group.

The team THUNDERSTO­RM finished on top of the podium thanks to the strong lifting done by team members Tenishia Thornton, Kyle Micallef, Rylee Borg, Matthew Abela, Nathan Mifsud and Craig Pace. 14 years old Tenishia Thornton (-49kg) lifted 54kg Snatch & 62kg Clean & Jerk, she also took an extra attempt on 66kg and it was successful. She managed to break a number of national records in this meet alone. All 6 attempts were national records in the U-15 49kg category, U-17 49kg category. She also broke the snatch national record in the U-20 49kg category, and also 2 snatch attempts and 2 total results were national records in the U-23 age group.

Kyle Micallef also had a great showing. Weighing in at only 81.3kg which is less than the 94/85kg category he used to compete last year, he finished with 111kg in the snatch and 137kg in the clean and jerk.

In second place, the team LION JAW, had very good result with 9 year old Julia Grima, who was forming part of the team broke her own national record when she finished with 18kg in the snatch and 22kg in the clean and jerk portion of the competitio­n. Other athletes from LION JAW, included Rodmar Pulis and Kieran Mifsud, Kayden Pace, Silvio Mallia. Andy Grech and Keith Azzopardi.

In third place, the team VIPER VENOM, had great results from young 16 year old athlete athletes Tristan Zammit who finished with a 100kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk breaking a national record in the process. Vlad Baldacchin­o also managed a national record in the 102kg category with his 129kg snatch. His massive snatch along with 145kg in the clean and jerk gave him a solid total of 274kg. Other athletes makes part of this team were Kim Camilleri Lagana, Ryan Degiorgio, Owen Camilleri, Lugher Debattista and Samuel Darmanin.

Athlete Brian Muscat, who is on the national team expected to compete next weekend at the Mediterran­ean Cup in San Marino, was part of the team called HURRICANES­PIN. He managed a great effort of 105kg snatch and 137kg clean and jerk. Other team members that make part of HURRICANES­PIN were Martin Pisani, Shaun Ciantar, Kayleigh Mangion, Aliyah Gatt, Lyla Tabone and Luke Treeby Ward.

The competitio­n saw a great amount of participan­ts and support in general. The MWA are always grateful for the massive support given by SportMalta and also the MOC to continue investing the sport and seeing it grow over the years.
