Swieqi staged the biggest upset so far this season inflicting a heavy defeat on favourites and still unbeaten Qormi. Swieqi took an early lead and Qormi missed what proved to be a vital penalty. Swieqi then increased their lead with Qormi unable to get back in the game.

Swieqi took the lead in the third minute when an inch perfect cross from the left flank by Kyle Muscat was met by Ayorinde Tejumola, chesting the ball to Felipe Fernandes, who on his turn did not hesitate to shoot from the edge of the box.

In the 17th minute, Qormi were awarded a penalty as Swieqi defender Shaun Bugeja handled the ball in his own box. However, Chris Matombo’s effort from the spot hit the post. Swieqi doubled their lead just after the half hour mark and what a beauty it was. Fernandes was served in the box with a throw in from the left and beat Azzopardi with a beautiful overhead kick. Eight minutes after the break, Swieqi were awarded a penalty when Iven Zammit fouled man of the match Fernandes in the box. Nigerian striker Tejomula scored calmly from 11-meters to put his team 0-3 up. On the hour, Qormi’s Brandon Grech hit the post and four minutes later, Matombo missed a sitter.

Nine minutes later, Swieqi added a fourth thanks to a fine individual move of substitute Ibrahim Salis. Six minutes from time Qormi were awarded a second penalty and Freud Gnindokponou made no mistake.
