MTA, Pembroke council, Nature Trust condemn vandalism to cycling track

Nature Trust - FEE Malta, The Malta Tourism Authority and the Pembroke local council have strongly condemned vandalism to the cycling track at the Pembroke Natura 2000 site.

Recently, the council has noted cars and quad bikes having gone onto the cycle track, and found bins broken.

"This heritage track was created some years back - through a project carried out by the Malta Tourism Authority. The restoration of this track was aimed at make the site more accessible to people. In this way the heritage trail could be followed by all, including those that prefer to walk, cycle, exercise, etc. Moreover the trail was also instrumental to promote eco tourism to this heritage site and provide mobility access to all including wheelchairs users," the statement read.

This trail passes across the Pembroke Natura 2000 site thus promoting Pembroke's natural beauty. "In recent months, various actions, forming part of a approved management plan, have also been undertaken in order to further reduce illegal dumping. Such dumping was causing habitat degradation," the statement read.

"The Pembroke Local Council, The Malta Tourism Authority, The AFM. ERA and Nature Trust Malta and the local community have been activity working to improve the ecological site. In the last few years alone, thousands of kilos of waste have been removed from the site. The Pembroke Natura 2000 site is now being patrolled and CCTVs will be set up in the near future to ensure that all efforts are not vandalized by the irresponsible few."

Nature Trust - FEE Malta appeals to anyone who notes any vandalism or illegal dumping in the site to report these incidents to either ERA enforcement on 99210404 or the Police - ALE Section or to the Pembroke Local Council or Nature Trust.
