Maritime archaeology: ‘Exploring the Deep’ - a talk by Professor Timmy Gambin
Professor Timmy Gambin will share his maritime archaeology experiences in a talk being organised by Din l-Art Ħelwa: ‘Exploring the Deep – Maritime Archaeology in the 21st Century’ this coming Thursday, 24 October, at 6pm at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall, 133 Melita St, Valletta.
In Malta, maritime archaeology can be traced to somewhat humble and sporadic beginnings in the late 1950s. Recently, it has firmly established itself within the local heritage sector. This talk will cover maritime archaeology in Malta in the 21st century the opportunities that are opening up in this field as well as the challenges being faced. It will also cover recent initiatives that permit managed access to some of the spectacular historic shipwrecks found around the Maltese
islands.
Professor Gambin is an Associate Professor of Maritime Archaeology in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, University of Malta, from where he obtained a B.A. in History. Following his undergraduate studies, he went on to attain an M.A. in Maritime Archaeology and History at the University of Bristol in the UK where he continued his postgraduate studies by reading for a doctorate in Maritime Archaeology. In 2001 he started as a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta and took up a full time post as Senior Lecturer in the spring of 2012.
