Sliema’s Chalet: public discussion on the collective hopes and aspirations for Sliema’s Chalet
Constructed in 1926 as an open hall situated on the Sliema promenade, the Chalet was the ‘it’ venue for public gatherings, dancing, partying, concerts and exuberance.
The strong force of the seawater smashing into the Chalet left its mark on the building, causing significant deterioration over time until it was fully dismantled in 2006.
The Chalet conjures vivid, cheerful, memories among people from different generations, even the younger ones who recall stories told by their parents or grandparents.
Today the platform to the Chalet feels disconnected from the rest of the Sliema Front, yet this space is still utilised by the public - they bathe, swim, congregate, interact here.
Chalet in Action - Public Discussion is an open call inviting all members of the public to participate in a discussion on public spaces in Malta, particularly focusing on the area of the Chalet.
It forms part of a longer public participation process through which the memories and desires of the public are given a platform. The findings of this process will be exhibited at the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, in an exhibition hosted by the European Cultural Centre Russia called ‘Public Architecture - Future of Europe’ from January-May 2020. Later, the exhibition will be showcased in Malta.
The invite to this discussion is open to everyone, however the organisers would appreciate if you could RSVP on 79319259 or on rebecca.micallef@nidum.com.
