BOV Masters tournament at the Marsa Sports Club this week
The BOV Tennis Masters tournament 2019 is being held at the Marsa Sports Club between this week with the final being played on Sunday at 2.30pm.
The last tournament of the calendar year pits the top ranked 8 players in Malta. Unfortunately, last year’s champion Matthew Cassar Torreggiani will not be able to defend his title due to an injury while six time champion and top seed Matthew Asciak will be very eager to regain the title he had to relinquish last year by withdrawing due to a shoulder injury.
The tournament was officially launched by Dr David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Tennis Federation and Charles Azzopardi, Executive PR & Marketing at Bank of Valletta during a press conference held at the Marsa Sports Club.
“The Malta Tennis Community has become accustomed to this spectacle of local tennis which brings the year’s season to a close offering guaranteed sporting entertainment during the festive season” said Dr Farrugia Sacco while thanking Bank of Valletta for its long-term support.
‘It is indeed a pleasure to see participants from past editions as well as up-and-coming young players participating in this year’s tournament’ said Charles Azzopardi. ‘Bank of Valletta prides itself as the major sponsor of sporting events in Malta and we are delighted to see the successes obtained by the Malta Tennis Federation both on a local and at an international level.’
During the launch of the tournament, Dr Farrugia Sacco went on to present certificates issued to participants for their attendance in an officiating course recently held and organised by the federation. “My federation recognises that officiating the game of tennis forms an important and integral part of the game. We are currently seeking assistance from the International Tennis Federation while investing in raising officiating standards. Such stronger presence on court for this leads to greater respect between players and officiating on court” said DrFarrugia Sacco while thanking Dr Mohab Fahmi for his expert training and examination during the course.
The BOV Tennis Masters Tournament 2019 is being hosted by the Marsa Sports Club. The players are split into two groups of four playing round robin with the top 2 players from each group contesting the semi-finals.
