Roma beats Parma 2-0 to reach quarterfinal against Juventus

-

Lorenzo Pellegrini scored twice to give Roma a 2-0 win at Parma on Thursday and a place in the Italian Cup quarterfinals.

Roma will face Juventus, which has won the trophy a record 13 times — including four of the past five editions.

After an unimpressive first half, Roma appeared transformed right from the start of the second period and took the lead four minutes after the restart.

Pellegrini played a swift onetwo with Nikola Kalinić before placing an angled drive into the bottom right corner.

The home side pushed for the equalizer but instead Pellegrini converted a penalty the 76th minute following a handball from Parma midfielder Antonino Barillà.

The result will serve as a boost to Roma following two successive defeats in the league.

Inter agree fee with Manchester United for veteran Young

Ashley Young is set to join Inter after Manchester United agreed a fee to sell the experienced fullback.

Omnisport understands the transfer will cost the Serie A giants €1.5million (£1.3m), subject to a medical and personal terms.

Young joined United from Aston Villa in 2011 and went on to make 261 appearances, scoring 19 goals.

The 34-year-old won four major honours for the Red Devils, including the 2012-13 Premier League, although the emergence of youngster Brandon Williams has placed him further down the pecking order this season.

The 2-1 extra-time defeat to Croatia in Moscow remains the most recent of his 39 international caps, which have yielded seven goals.

Young’s move will continue a recent flow of players from Old Trafford to San Siro, with Alexis

Sanchez signing for Inter on loan last August after fellow forward Romelu Lukaku completed a permanent switch.

Under the guidance of former Italy and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, the Nerazzurri are chasing their first Scudetto since 2010 and lie second in Serie A – two points shy of champions Juventus at the halfway point of the season.

Jose Mourinho eager to sign Joao Cancelo

Tottenham Hotspur have made their first signing of 2020 and also the first signing since the arrival of Jose Mourinho as their manager. It was not a big surprise to see it was a player from Portuguese Primeira liga, as Spurs signed Gedson Fernandes on loan from Benfica. Now, he could be going after another Portuguese player.

According to El Desmarque, Mourinho would like to add Joao Cancelo to his squad at Tottenham Hotspur. Mourinho has been known for signing either Portuguese players or players from Portuguese top flight and that could be continued with Cancelo.

The Portugal international fullback only linked up with Manchester City in the summer of 2019, when he made a move from Juventus to England in a swap-transfer deal that had seen Danilo go the other way around. But Cancelo is now frustrated by a lack of game time with the Premier League champions and Spurs would also welcome a solution for their right-back position.

Report: Giroud done deal

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud’s agent is in Milan to finalise the contract with Inter before the World Cup winner will travel to Italy for his medical.

Nicolò Schira has revealed that the deal between Inter and Chelsea has been confirmed and the 33-year-old will move to San Siro for €5m plus €1.5m in addons.

The agent has allegedly arrived at the San Siro to close the personal terms of the deal before the French attacker will travel to Milan to finalise the last formalities of the proposed move.

The former Arsenal player will arrive “in the next 48 to 72 hours for his medical” as the report confirms he will leave Stamford Bridge.

The Gazzetta dello Sport journalist reveals that Giroud will receive a salary of €4m plus bonuses a year with the Nerazzurri and has agreed to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Giroud has only played seven games for Chelsea this term and contributed one goal for the Blues, during their UEFA Super Cup defeat to Liverpool in August.

Cutrone: 'A great feeling'

Patrick Cutrone said it “was a great feeling” to score on his full debut for Fiorentina and revealed he was “delighted” with the move to Artemio Franchi.

The former Milan forward scored during the 2-1 win against Atalanta and helped the Viola through to the last eight of the Coppa Italia this term.

Despite already presenting himself for his new fans yesterday, he met with the reporters today to talk about the decision to move back to Italy.
