Illegal Wied Qirda dam being removed

Prime Minister Robert Abela has said that for his government it is not acceptable for there to be even one family without a roof over their heads.

The Prime Minister yesterday presided over the inauguration of 11 apartments for social housing, which saw €750,000 invested.

The investment in social housing is occurring as we believe that it is our duty as a government, Abela remarked.

The housing strategy is not a unilateral one, he said, adding that it is spread over several areas that together will help more families have a roof over their heads.

The housing project does not only involve investment in new buildings, which is happening through a hundred million euro investment with funds coming from the IIP programme and the European Investment Bank that will see 1,700 units built. It also involves the identification of dilapidated sites to be converted into apartments, he added.

In Marsamxett, investment was made so that more people would have a home where to live, while also regenerating the area, he added.

Abela said that the government is considering the housing sector as a priority, while he was also clear that social housing is only there for those who need it. He observed that the Housing Authority launched the process of profiling, where one not only relies on the information of the applicant, but goes further to see where they live in order to assess their situation and needs.
