Bridge Teams competition comes to an end
It is hard to believe that the bridge season is in its halfway mark already. The Malta Bridge Club Teams, the Irene and Victor Attard Bondi teams competition, was played over 3 sessions and after the first session it seemed like there was going to be a new team who was going to win this event.
However, Albert Sacco and Marie Farrugia, Nathalie Marlin and Graham Penney were the winners after a very bad start. Well done to them having overcome their disaster and go on to win.
Second were Bjarni Kristjannson, Svetlana Roukliada, Brigitte and David Baron.
Mr. Dennis Attard Bondi very generously said he was going to increase his sponsorship for next year which is really very generous of him. The club thanked him profusely. This is the last competition the Malta Bridge Club holds this year.
There is a lot of activity going on throughout the year and the committee is kept very busy organising them all. Likewise, I would like to mention the Penthouse Malta Bridge club members group of players who play on Monday and Friday in the afternoon. Their committee is kept very busy too.
The Marsovin National Pairs competition will be held by the Malta Bridge Association on the Friday 13 March and Monday 16 March, followed by Monday 23 March. The venue is the Malta Union Club. Play starts at 4pm. Any paid up member of the association is eligible to play.
The Sigma pairs competition, which is played on the first Monday of the month is just past its halfway mark and there is still lots to play for.
The international bridge world has been very fortunate that it held its world team championships last year and not this year. Last year they were held in Wuhan in China. China has a large bridge playing community and I sincerely hope none of them were touched by this coronavirus.
I was very fortunate to play bridge a few weeks ago with Mervyn, an Irish bridge player. We discussed the game at length. He had lived in Australia and had opened two bridge clubs. He also managed to introduce bridge to a University.
I said how wonderful that was as we have been trying to introduce it to our University for many years with no success. He understood the difficulty but said we should persist. Bill Gates, who I had the good fortune of playing against, is a great advocator of bridge he says, “Anybody who is good at bridge is going to be great at a lot of things.”
