New Luqa pedestrian and cycling bridge inaugurated
The new pedestrian and cycling bridge on Aviation Avenue has been officially opened.
This €2.3 million project was inaugurated by Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg.
The project will lead to safer connections between Luqa, Gudja, the Airport, the Institute of Tourism Studies and the area for all those who travel on foot or by bike, while being accessible to everyone, the ministry said.
The bridge includes ramps and lifts to facilitate accessibility and has a direct connection with bus stops, footpaths and cycle lanes in this main road. The project began in the second half of 2019. Apart from the structure itself and accessibility and safety facilities, the bridge includes new lighting while the surrounding areas now have more than 15 indigenous trees and around 130 bushes planted by Infrastructure Malta.
Minister Borg said that, “today we can see a new facility thanks to the infrastructural commitment this government has for our country. We are committed to continue investing in infrastructure on every level and to continue creating safe and highquality facilities for all road users, especially more vulnerable ones. This work results in a better standard of living for our country and this is not the only project of its kind in our plan. In the near future we will open a similar bridge in Blata l-Bajda, while works will soon commence on another such facility near MCAST in Paola, and there are others in our plan. I would like to thank Infrastructure Malta for their committed work, and we will continue moving in this positive direction for the benefit of all Maltese and Gozitan people.”
