PL president Daniel Micallef submits nomination for deputy leader post
PL President Daniel Micallef has announced his intention to submit his bid for the post of PL Deputy Leader.
On Thursday, the PL’s Extraordinary General Conference saw unanimous approval for a change in the party’s statute regarding the post of Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, where it was decided that persons contesting must not be Members of Parliament, and those holding the position will not be allowed to contest a general election for two years after leaving the post.
It was widely rumoured that PL President Micallef is being favoured by party members and officials to take on the now vacant role.
Posting on Facebook, Micallef said that he will be responding to the calls made for him to seek to contest for the position. “I look forward so that, together, we can strengthen the concept of the movement and create a better future for our country.”
The Malta Independent had contacted Micallef on 26 June to ask about him possibly submitting his name for the post of PL Deputy Leader, however he was coy in his response, saying that he was focusing on his work as PL President.
On Wednesday 17 June, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that Chris Cardona has resigned as Deputy Leader for Party Affairs of the PL after facing calls for his resignation from the party when his name cropped up in the compilation of evidence against Yorgen Fenech in the case of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
