Minister says he’s not involved in police investigations
Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said yesterday that he is not involved in any police investigations, including those related to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
“I have been following what is happening in court, and I am aware that the new Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has taken the necessary decisions, even with regard to the Economic Crimes Unit, which will now be run by a different person,” he said.
Camilleri was fielding questions from journalists after a conference regarding services to victims of criminality.
Camilleri was asked about Assistant police commissioner Ian Abdilla’s testimony in the Daphne Caruana Galizia Public inquiry, where Abdilla stated that he had never summoned Konrad Mizzi or Keith Schembri over the Panama Papers scandal. Mizzi and Schembri had been discovered as having opened companies in Panama.
Camilleri did not give a clear answer whether he was comfortable that the Economic Crimes Unit ignored the FIAU reports. He stated that new Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has already taken the necessary decisions and that the Unit is now run by another person.
