Two more virus deaths, total reaches 57

The health authoritie­s on Wednesday announced that two more people have died with COVID-19, meaning that the total number of deaths has now reached 57.

The first victim was an elderly woman.

The woman, who was 89-yearsold, was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital on 23 October and tested positive for COVID-19 on the same day.

She continued to receive care at Mater Dei, where she passed away on Tuesday night.

The Health Ministry said that the woman suffered from other chronic illnesses.

The second victim was announced later in the day. The man, who was 91-years-old, passed away on Wednesday morning. He was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital on 16 October, and tested positive for COVID-19 on that same day. He continued to receive treatment at the hospital, where he passed away. The Health Ministry said that the man suffered from other chronic illnesses.

The Health Ministry expressed its condolence­s and urged everyone to follow the COVID-19 guidelines.

In their daily update, the health authoritie­s said that 75 new cases of COVID-19 were reported. 74 patients recovered from the virus.

The number of active cases stands at 1,915.

It is the lowest number of cases reported in a single-day in 15 days, and only the second time in that period that a triple-digit number of cases was not reported. 2,946 swab tests were carried out between Tuesday and Wednesday, taking the total number of swab tests up to 326,580.

Authoritie­s said that yesterday’s cases are still being investigat­ed, but gave details about the cases reported on Tuesday.

Out of the 107 cases reported on Tuesday; 11 were family members of previously known cases, 8 were direct contacts of positive cases, 6 were from social gatherings, 4 were work colleagues of positive cases, and 1 was imported.

Malta has now had 5,760 cases of the virus. 3,789 patients have recovered, while 57 have died.
