AC Milan beats Fiorentina 2-0 to remain at the top, unbeaten

-

Despite the absence of its coach and star striker AC Milan maintained its unbeaten start to the Serie A season by beating Fiorentina 2-0 on Sunday to ensure it would end the weekend at the top of the table.

An Alessio Romagnoli header and a Franck Kessié penalty in the first half secured the victory in front of the watching Zlatan Ibrahimović, who was injured but cheering his teammates on from the stands.

Milan coach Stefano Pioli was also still absent after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The Rossoneri moved five points clear of Inter Milan and Sassuolo, which both played on Saturday.

Roma can move into second, three points below Milan, if it wins at Napoli later in what will be an emotional match. It is Napoli's first Serie A game since former player Diego Maradona died on Wednesday in his native Argentina.

There was a tribute to Maradona at San Siro, as there was in all the Serie A matches this weekend. That included a minute's silence for the former Napoli player, while his image was also projected on the stadium screens again in the 10th minute, in honor of his shirt number.

Milan took the lead in the 17th minute when Romagnoli was left unmarked to head in a corner at the back post.

Dušan Vlahović almost equalized shortly after but his effort was tipped onto the post by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Instead, it was Milan that doubled its lead in the 28th when Kessié converted a penalty after Alexis Saelemaekers was tripped by Germán Pezzella.

Kessié had another penalty saved by Fiorentina goalkeeper Bartłomiej Drągowski five minutes from time following a foul by Martín Cáceres on Theo Hernández.

Milan could have extended its lead early in the second half but Hakan Çalhanoğlu's strike came off the post.

Tottenham secures draw at Chelsea, tops Premier League

Tottenham ground out a 0-0 draw at Chelsea on Sunday to return to the top spot with an ultradefensive display from Jose Mourinho's side frustrating the Premier League's joint top scorers.

At a stadium where it has won only once in 30 years, Tottenham had just a single shot on target but halted Chelsea's six-match winning run in all competitions.

"We are not happy and that for me is fantastic," Mourinho said. "It is a complete change of mentality, of personality."

The point leaves Tottenham ahead of Liverpool on goal difference, while Chelsea is two points further back in third.

Mourinho, who won three Premier League titles with Chelsea, has put a club that hasn't won the championship since 1961 into early contention.

That's not how Mourinho sees it.

"We are not even in the race," Mourinho said. "We are just a pony."

An attritional game managed to deliver chances for both teams to win in stoppage time.

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud nipped in when Joe Rodon, on his first start for Tottenham, headed back to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris but his shot was easily saved.

"They are very good opposition and I knew I was going to be in for a tough night," Rodon said. "I got away with two mistakes but I'll learn from it and come back strong."

And Giovani Lo Celso wasted a late Tottenham counterattack after being released by Lucas Moura, striking wide of the target rather than setting up Harry Kane.

"We almost gifted them one at the end," said Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, who won titles under Mourinho at the west London club.

It was the last game at Stamford Bridge without fans before the relaxation of coronavirus restrictions are due to see up to 2,000 spectators allowed in for Chelsea's home game against Leeds on Saturday, having been locked out since March.

Hertha frustrates depleted Leverkusen in 0-0 draw

A depleted Bayer Leverkusen was held 0-0 by struggling Hertha Berlin on Sunday as it climbed above Borussia Dortmund to go third in the Bundesliga.

Missing nine players due to injury and illness, Leverkusen had four outfield players on its bench — three defenders and a 17year-old forward — along with two goalkeepers. Nine substitutes can be named.

Coach Peter Bosz made only one of the five changes allowed during the game, and said that the lack of depth on the bench hurt Leverkusen's attempts to score a late winner.

"There wasn't much left in there," Bosz said. "We tried and I can't criticize the lads for that. We fought until the end to turn the game around."

That didn't stop Leverkusen dominating possession and recording 14 shots to Hertha's five, but there were few clear scoring chances for either team. Both Hertha and Leverkusen pressed and marked well to keep the forwards largely quiet.

Hertha's Dodi Lukebakio forced a save from Leverkusen goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky early on, and Leverkusen midfielder Kerem Demirbay was a sporadic threat with his long-range shooting.

Leverkusen captain Lars Bender came closest when he headed wide at a free kick in added time.

Leverkusen kept its unbeaten record in the Bundesliga and overtook Dortmund — which lost 2-1 to Cologne on Saturday — but Peter Bosz's team missed an opportunity to go second and within a point of leader Bayern Munich.

Hertha sits 13th and is four points above the automatic relegation spots.

It's another disappointing campaign so far for a club which has spent heavily in recent years with ambitions of becoming a power in both Bundesliga and European competitions.

Leverkusen's top scorer Lucas Alario was out with a knee problem, putting more pressure on Patrik Schick to perform in the striker role and adding to an already troublesome injury list. Winger Karim Bellarabi had a thigh problem and attacking midfielder Nadiem Amiri is ill, while midfielders Exequiel Palacios and Charles Aránguiz have each missed several games.

Relegation-threatened Mainz earned another valuable point in a 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim and could have taken a second straight win but for Jean-Philippe Mateta hitting the post in the 75th minute.

Robin Quaison gave Mainz the lead with a goal in the 33rd but Ihlas Bebou leveled for Hoffenheim with his first league goal of the season off Ryan Sessegnon's cross in the 62nd.

Hoffenheim finished with 10 men when Dennis Geiger was red-carded for a wayward sliding tackle. Hoffenheim stays 12th and Mainz is 16th.
