Education Minister announces the development of a bilingual glossary of mathematical terms
A bilingual glossary of mathematical terms will soon be available to support early childhood and primary-level teachers in the teaching and learning of mathematics, Minister for Education Justyne Caruana said.
She spoke during a meeting with the working group that is developing the glossary.
During the meeting, the members of the working group highlighted that the primary aim of the glossary is to provide a comprehension bank of mathematical terms, in both English and Maltese. It is anticipated that the glossary will serve as a useful reference for teachers and students since, in Malta, mathematics is very often taught in both languages. This will also give more importance to the Maltese language by being embedded in subjects in which the English language is normally used.
To date, the terminology has been compiled for a large number of mathematical topics that are encountered at early childhood and primary levels, while other topics will be completed in the near future. The glossary-inprogress will soon be available in both online and hard-copy versions for a period of public consultation.
The Bilingual Glossary of Mathematical Terms project was initiated by the Ministry for Education, and the members of the working group are Marie Therese Farrugia (University of Malta), who chairs the group, David Muscat and Lara Ann Vella (National Agency for Literacy) and Melanie Casha Sammut (Directorate for Learning and Assessment Programmes, Ministry for Education).
