Zurrieq and San Giljan reach semis

Żurrieq Sunrise and San Ġiljan Saints advanced to the semifinal the MAFA Special League after winning their respective dramatic encounters.

Both teams joined Valletta Stars and Senglea Gunners who had booked a place in the last four of the competitio­n last Saturday.

San Ġiljan Saints confirmed their good form of late as they saw off Versity AFC 2-1. It was an evenly contested match with both sides giving their all to get the most desired qualificat­ion.

After a goalless draw before halftime, San Ġiljan Saints surged ahead on 40 minutes thanks to an Ebrima Conteh's header that beat the Versity goalkeeper.

The Saints doubled the score 60 seconds afterwards as Phil Taylor converted a penalty.

Being two goals down, the TalQroqq outfit pressed hard and managed to reduce the score through Ryan Party. The last five minutes saw them venture forward in search of the dramatic equalizer but their opponents managed to control the proceeding­s.

Żurrieq Sunrise also went through the final four of the competitio­n after beating Balzan Youths 2-1. It was a hard fought match between two teams who had the objective to advance to the next round of this competitio­n.

Axel Fleri put Żurrieq Sunrise ahead before half-time with Balzan Youths equalizing through Chris Farrugia.

Despite this goal, Żurrieq remained concentrat­ed and found the winning goal through Diego Sanchez who beat the Balzan goalkeeper.
