Student Placement Programme - The experience of new employers

The Student Placement Programme (SPP) is an annual, mutually beneficial programm e for ICT and ICT related students and employers of all sectors during the summer season. This year’s programme will be officially ending next week.

- ANDREA MALLIA

The programme aims to reduce the mismatch between supply and demand for ICT skills in the Maltese labour market. With the help of this programme employers can have a more diversified workforce as they employ new generations with new talents and a variety of ideas into their organisation.

With an investment of over €750,000 in student salaries, a total number of 396 students and 113 employers benefited from the programme. This year, to reduce the financial burden that came about due to the pandemic, MITA will be reimbursing 75% of the students’ salary to private employers and 100% of the salary cost to the NGOs and public sector.

The following shows the statistics in which sectors the students were placed, and how many employers from each sector benefited from this year’s programme:

This year we had a total of 25 new employers, 6 from NGOs and 19 from the private sector. We reached out to some of these organisations to voice out what they think about the Student Placement Programme:

“We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the dedication and eagerness shown by the students that joined us for the summer placement. It has allowed our Payroll Start-up to speed up our development pipeline, not only by adding new features but also by playing a key role in our cloud payroll software becoming UK-market ready. I can confidently say that we’ll be extending full-time positions to students from our first cohort once they complete their students” – Buddy Limited.

“This year, E&S Group participated for the first time in the SPP.

We found MITA very professional and organised, they guided us throughout the process and helped us in any difficulties. Apart from that we were very satisfied with the students assigned to us, they were very well-mannered, had great knowledge and were hard workers” – E&S Group.

“LBGTI+ Gozo is proud to be part of this programme and finds SPP to be another great tool to aid in our community work and keep our perspective fresh and unique. As a voluntary organisation, communication with various stakeholders in Malta and the EU is of key importance to our overall mission, and through this programme we can make valuable connections with other organisations who want to make a difference. The students in this programme are engaged and eager to share their ideas and through their creativity, visually and digitally, give us as an organisation a new way to approach our activism” – LGBTI+ Gozo.
