PN pledges to protect ODZ by requiring 2/3rds Parliamentary majority for it to be touched

-

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech pledged that, under a PN government, land located outside the development zone would be protected.

Speaking during a political activity, Grech said that the PN has the environment at heart.

“Those spaces outside the development zone, for us, must remain outside development zones. This is a clear declaration,” he said.

“But it is not enough for me or the PN alone to make this declaration. We must protect these unbuilt zones for future generations. As such, I, and a government led by me, would ensure that Outside Development Zones will be protected and would need a 2/3rds majority vote in Parliament for them to be touched. They would only be touched for the benefit of the community, such as if there is need for a school, a hospital, or something which is for the common good. This is my declaration, my promise, my pact that I am making with the people.”

“We need to protect the zones that are not yet built up for future generations,” he added.

A Nationalist Government will also strive to give back private unused land back to the public, if the owner agrees to be paid the market value for their land as is already happening in Swieqi, said Grech.

Grech noted that the mentality of residents and citizens needs to be focused on defending Malta’s environment, by taking care not to pollute our public space but rather take care of it as an extension of our physical homes.

He stated that if elected, by 2030 half of cars on Maltese roads will be electric.
