Manchest Young Boy Bayern Munich Er United beaten by ys despite Ronaldo lead h outclass Barcelona at Camp Nou

-

Cristiano Ronaldo's early goal could not save Manchester United from another Champions League loss in Switzerland, 2-1 on Tuesday against a sharp and robust Young Boys team.

Jordan Siebatcheu, the United States forward on as a substitute, struck in the fifth and last minute of stoppage time when the ball broke into space behind the United defense.

Ronaldo's record-extending 135th Champions League goal in the 13th minute was the first of his — and United's — only two shots of the game. He was substituted in the 72nd.

It was created by Bruno Fernandes' clever pass with the outside of his right foot into the path of Ronaldo for a low shot that squirmed under goalkeeper David von Ballmoos.

Reduced to 10 men in the 35th minute after a red-card foul by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the Premier League co-leader struggled to create any more scoring chances against the unheralded Swiss champion.

United was already under regular pressure before Wan-Bissaka's rash challenge on Christopher Martins deep in the Young Boys half.

Young Boys deservedly leveled in the 66th when midfielder Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu met a low cross into a crowded goalmouth with a shot that beat goalkeeper

David de Gea at his near post.

10-man Sevilla salvages 1-1 draw with Salzburg

Salzburg was left to rue two missed spot kicks in its 1-1 draw at 10-man Sevilla on Tuesday in a messy Champions League opener that featured four first-half penalties.

Salzburg converted only one of its three penalties, all earned by inspired striker Karim Adeyemi before 40 minutes were up in Seville.

Luka Sucic's spot kick gave the Austrian team the lead in the 21st minute. But Sucic and Adeyemi, both age 19, missed two others in the first half.

Ivan Rakitic equalized for Sevilla against the flow of play from a penalty in the 42nd.

Sevilla played a man down from the 50th after striker Youssef EnNesryi got his second booking for simulating a foul in the area.

Villarreal held by Atalanta

Villarreal was frustrated by Atalanta in its return to the Champions League after a 10year absence, being held to a 2-2 draw at the start of the group stage on Tuesday.

The Europa League champions rallied to take the lead in the second half but conceded late to relinquish the opening win at home.

Robin Gosens equalized in the 83rd minute after Remo Freuler

had put the visitors ahead six minutes into the match at La Ceramica Stadium in southeastern Spain. Villarreal got on the board with Manu Trigueros before halftime and went ahead with a goal from Arnaut "Danjuma" Groeneveld in the second half.

Atalanta is making its third consecutive appearance and is looking to repeat the success of its first two campaigns when it reached the knockout stages. It was a surprise quarterfinalist in its debut two seasons ago.

Bayern beats Barcelona 3-0 for 1st loss of post-Messi era

Thomas Müller scored a goal and Robert Lewandowski added two more to help Bayern Munich deal Barcelona its first loss of the post-Lionel Messi era on Tuesday in a 3-0 victory at Camp Nou in their Champions League opener.

Müller's 34th-minute strike took his career tally to seven goals against Barcelona, including the two he netted in the 8-2 shellacking Bayern dealt Barcelona the last time they met in August 2020.

Without Messi to rely on as it had for years, Barcelona was running scared from the start as it focused on protecting itself from another embarrassing defeat.

The final score hid the total dominance of the Bundesliga powerhouse. Julian Nagelsmann's team turned the once great attacking juggernaut of Barcelona into a jit

tery bunch hunkered down their own area.

Lewandowski turned Bayern's complete control into goals in the 56th and 85th, both times putting in rebounds from shots that came off the post to the striker.

Even its fans back at Camp Nou, which was at 40% capacity, for the first time in the Champions League since the start of the pandemic could not muster a better showing from the home squad.

Juventus beats Malmo 3-0 for 1st win since Ronaldo's exit

Juventus claimed its first win of the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era by beating Malmo 3-0 in the Champions League after a flurry of firsthalf goals on Tuesday.

Alex Sandro's 23rd-minute opener was followed by goals in the space of 60 seconds by Paulo Dybala — from the penalty spot — and Alvaro Morata on the stroke of halftime in the south of Sweden.

Juventus has failed to win any of its three games in Serie A this season, the last two being losses that came after the departure of Ronaldo to Manchester United.

Sandro's goal — a stooping header from a right-wing cross from Juan Cuadrado that was flicked on by Rodrigo Bentancur

— came just as Malmo was starting to apply some pressure on Juventus. After that, the visitors dominated.

Morata was brought down by Malmo center back Lasse Nielsen just inside the area for a penalty that Dybala was forced to wait to take, with the VAR making a check for offside against the Spain striker. Dybala slipped as he took the spot kick, but it went down the middle to beat goalkeeper Ismael Diawara in the 45th minute.

Almost immediately from the kickoff, Adrien Rabiot fed the ball forward, Nielsen failed to make a clearance, and Morata ran through before scooping a finish off his shin and just under the crossbar.

Benfica held to 0-0 draw at Dynamo Kyiv

Benfica was lucky to escape with a point against Dynamo Kyiv in a 0-0 draw in the Champions League on Tuesday which dents both teams' already slim chances of advancing from a group also containing Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Mykola Shaparenko volleyed the ball past Benfica goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos in the last minute of stoppage time for what the Ukrainians thought was the winner. Video review disallowed

the goal for an offside in the buildup.

Seconds before, Vlachodimos had seen one Dynamo shot hit his crossbar and parried another from Vitaliy Buyalskiy on the rebound.

The all-action finish was out of character for a Dynamo team which created few chances until then.

Lukaku seals Chelsea win over Zenit to start CL defense

Just what was expected of Romelu Lukaku. Just what Chelsea missed so often last season. And just what he couldn't produce in his first spell at Stamford Bridge.

The striker who couldn't even get on the field in the Champions League a decade ago for Chelsea is back as the leading targetman.

On his European debut for the club, the 28-year-old Belgian ensured Chelsea made a successful start to its Champions League title defense by clinching a 1-0 victory over Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday.

The goal showed why Chelsea invested a club-record 115 million euros ($135 million in August) in signing from Inter Milan the player it offloaded in 2014 as a peripheral figure.

Lukaku darted into space in the

penalty area, evading the defense, to meet a cross from Cesar Azpilicueta and head into the net in the 69th minute against the Russian champions.

It added to the three goals Lukaku has already scored in the Premier League this season, which has put Chelsea only behind Manchester United at the top on goals scored.

As European Cup wins go, Chelsea's triumph has seemed understated, just as beating Manchester City in the final in May was unexpected.

Coronavirus restrictions denied Chelsea a victory parade in May. There wasn't even the parading of the trophy around Stamford Bridge before the start of the title defense on Tuesday.

There were, however, individual European season awards handed out to players and manager Thomas Tuchel by UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin after an explosion of fireworks above the main stand.

The head of European football received a smattering of jeers from the Chelsea fans, although this isn't a club with a great grievance against UEFA. Especially as Chelsea fans protested the club's ill-fated pursuit of a Super League in April that Ceferin opposed.
