Launch of European Week of Sports

This year's Edition of the European Week of Sport was launched last week at the Cottonera Sports Complex. The European Week of Sport is one of the tools created by the European Commission to encourage more people to do sport and physical activity.

Mark Cutajar Chief Executive of SportMalta said that the activities will be focused between 23 September and 30 September. The opening of the activities will take place through sports activities at the Kirkop sports complex. More than 20 sports associatio­ns will take part and they range from individual sports to team sports. The event starts at 18:00.

Cutajar said that another important event will take place on the 25th of the month in the garden next to the Cottonera Complex. The activity traditiona­lly known as Be Active night will be an Obstacle uphill sprint relay between 8 teams and 32 athletes on a knockout basis.

He also mentioned that there will be other activities including activities in different localities and from different organizati­ons as well as activities in schools. Cutajar said SportMalta will start a media campaign on outdoor activities, volunteeri­ng in sport as well as on the balance between sport and education.

Finally, Cutajar also announced that the ambassador­s of this edition are Sacha Gatt, Yazmin Zammit Stevens, Matthew Bugeja, Vlada Krachenko, Matthew Abela, Eleanor Berzzina, Andrew Chetcuti, Thomas Borg and Carla Scicluna who all took part in the

Olympics and Paralympic­s..

Luciano Busuttil, chairman of SportMalta, said that this activity is the flagship of the entity. He reiterated that sport and physical activity are important and urged more local councils to make local halls more accessible for more physical activity.

Parliament­ary Secretary Clifton Grima said that SportMalta has been a protagonis­t in recent years and has done unpreceden­ted work in sport. He mentioned the infrastruc­tural work that has been done as well as various different activities to make people of all ages more involved in sports and physical activity. He urged everyone present to deliver a message in particular during this month.
