Ronaldo scores, West Ham miss penalty as Manchester United win

-

Cristiano Ronaldo began the comeback as Manchester United won 2-1 at West Ham thanks to Mark Noble missing a penalty in stoppage time for the hosts straight after being brought off the bench on Sunday. The club captain was sent on by manager David Moyes to take the penalty after Luke Shaw handled in the area.

The long-serving midfielder, who retires at the end of the season, had not missed a spotkick since December 2016, but he was denied a winner by United goalkeeper David De Gea.

It was a dramatic end to a thrilling match that saw Jesse Lingard score the winner for United against the club he starred for while on loan last season. The England forward curled into the net in the 89th minute.

Ronaldo had earlier scored his fourth goal in three matches since returning to United, cancelling out Said Benrahma's deflected opener for the hosts.

Brighton maintained its impressive start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Leicester on Sunday.

VAR benefited Brighton as Leicester had two equalizers ruled out in the final stages, with Harvey Barnes judged to be offside and obstructing the goalkeeper on both occasions.

Neal Maupay put Brighton ahead from the penalty spot in the 35th minute, sending goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way, and Danny Welbeck doubled the hosts' lead just after the break with a welltimed header.

Jamie Vardy pulled one back in the 61st with his 150th goal for the club on his 250th Premier League appearance.

Brighton has 12 points from five games, only one point less than the early pacesetters.

Wirtz leads 10-man Leverkusen to 3-1 win at Stuttgart

Florian Wirtz led 10-man Bayer Leverkusen to a 3-1 win at Stuttgart on Sunday, dealing American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo's team its third loss in five Bundesliga games this season.

The 18-year-old Wirtz set up Leverkusen's second goal in the 19th minute and scored the third to give the visitors their third win of the season.

Robert Andrich was the central figure for Leverkusen in the first half - for mixed reasons.

Andrich scored the opening goal — the first since his summer switch from Union Berlin — in the second minute, but was sent off with the team leading 2-0 in the 30th. Andrich was initially shown a yellow card for his studs-up lunge at Tanguy

Coulibaly's knee but a VAR intervention switched it to red. Coulibaly was fortunate to be able to continue.

Wirtz had set up Patrik Schick for Leverkusen's second goal and the visitors looked like scoring more as they maintained their grip on the game until Andrich's dismissal.

Orel Mangala equalized in the 38th, finishing off the rebound after Lukáš Hrádecký brilliantly saved Konstantinos Mavropanos' header from a free kick.

Halftime provided a welcome break for Leverkusen.

Leverkusen's Kerem Demirbay was involved in a midfield scrap for the ball, which fell to Wirtz, who surged forward and fired inside the far corner in the 70th.

This time, Stuttgart had no response.

Borussia Dortmund hosts Union Berlin later Sunday, and Eintracht Frankfurt is at Wolfsburg.

American Hoppe debuts with Mallorca in draw with Villarreal

American forward Matthew Hoppe came off the bench in the second half to make his debut with Mallorca in a 0-0 draw against Villarreal in the Spanish league on Sunday, missing out on the potential winner after his late goal was called off for offside.

Hoppe entered the game in the 60th minute and had his goal disallowed after a breakaway in the 82nd. He converted a cross by Joan Sastre into the net but the linesman ruled him offside. Video review confirmed the call.

The 20-year-old Hoppe joined

Mallorca from German club Schalke at the end of the transfer window this summer. Hoppe, who is from Yorba Linda, California, played for the LA Galaxy Academy and signed with Schalke in July 2019. He made his U.S. national team debut on July 15 against Martinique in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Mallorca is back in the top flight after spending a year in the second division last season. It had won two of its first four matches, with a draw against Real Betis and a loss at Athletic Bilbao last week.

"We had our chances, but in the end we are happy with the point against a very difficult team like Villarreal," veteran Mallorca goalkeeper Manolo Reina said.

Mallorca had won two of its last three league matches against Villarreal, whose winless streak to start the league reached four matches. Unai Emery's team hasn't won in six matches in all competitions this season. It was coming off a 2-2 home draw against Atalanta in the group stage of the Champions League, a competition it hadn't played in for 10 years.

"They played tight on defense and kept us from playing our game," Villarreal goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli said. "We have to keep working hard."

Coming off three straight victories, Real Madrid later visits a Valencia team that is off to a surprisingly good start with three wins and a draw. The league lead is up for grabs with both teams tied on 10 points, one behind Atlético Madrid, which was held by Athletic to a scoreless draw at home on Saturday.

Gouiri misses late penalty as Nice draws 2-2 with Monaco

Amine Gouiri missed a late penalty as French league frontrunner Nice was held to a 2-2 draw by visiting Monaco in a thrilling French Riviera derby on Sunday.

Gouiri had been involved in both of the Nice goals when he had the chance to make it 3-2 from the spot in the 82nd minute following a handball by defender Benoit Badiashile. He sent goalkeeper Alexander Nübel the wrong way but missed the target.

Unbeaten Nice was in fourth place ahead of later games while Monaco sits in 15th.

Monaco striker Wissam Ben Yedder's penalty five minutes earlier had made it 2-2, moments after Gouiri and strike partner Andy Delort combined to set up midfielder Hicham Boudaoui.

After Denmark forward Kasper Dolberg limped off early on for Nice with a knee injury, Russia midfielder Aleksandr Golovin put Monaco ahead in the 39th minute from a rightwing cross by Gelson Martins.

Golovin had gone close in the 31st minute, when his goalbound effort hit the back of Ben Yedder.

Delort, who had replaced Dolberg, equalized in the 50th as he headed in Gouiri's cross. Gouiri has four goals and two assists in six games.

Nice lost another player to injury when right back Jordan Lotomba went off with a calf injury soon after Delort's goal.

Later Sunday, Lionel Messi was set for his home debut as leader Paris Saint-Germain faced Lyon at Parc des Princes.

PSG striker Kylian Mbappe passed a fitness test on Sunday morning after twisting his ankle against Club Brugge in midweek.

On Saturday, the match between Lens and defending champion Lille was interrupted for about 30 minutes after fans from the northern rivals clashed at halftime. Secondplace Lens won 1-0.

The French league said Sunday that its disciplinary commission will meet on Monday to discuss the fan violence that marred Saturday's match between Lens and Lille.

It was the second high-profile incident of the season in France following serious disorder at the Nice-Marseille game in August, which was called off and will be replayed next month.
