Agreement to bolster historical value of Palazzo Xara in Rabat
An agreement between the Lands Authority and the Għaqda Mużikali L’Isle Adam will bolster the historical value of Palazzo Xara, a prominent building in the historic heart of Rabat.
The Minister for the Economy and Industry, Silvio Schembri, who presided over this agreement, mentioned how this assistance is part of a series of benefits which the Lands Authority is contributing to voluntary associations, following the application process.
Minister Schembri noted how over the past few years Palazzo Xara has served as the seat of the Għaqda Mużikali L’Isle Adam, with the entrance of the Palace occupied by a lotto office. Through the agreement, the Lands Authority will allocate a new space for the relocation of the lotto office to another location outside the Palace, at a preferential rental rate that the Authority usually only applies in the case of voluntary associations. Therefore, the entrance of the Palace will be returned to the Musical Society, enabling it to be enjoyed in its original state.
“This is a majestic palace with an entrance which does not suit its grandeur. A palace which has something that is missing. It will now have an embellished entrance which befits its beauty. We want children and young people to come here for cultural and educational purposes,” said
Schembri.
He also spoke about his commitment in ensuring that in its operations the Lands Authority remains close to the communities. Statistics compiled by the Authority show that around 15 voluntary associations a year, including cultural or charity organisations, benefit from assistance consisting of preferential rates for the renting of government premises.
The Minister added that through such projects government is helping voluntary organisations to expand their services. In this case, bolstering the musical learning of children and young people at the core of our villages. This while the cultural potential of historic palaces is increased in order to generate more trade for the Maltese people.
The president of the Għaqda Mużikali L’Isle Adam, architect Karm Farrugia highlighted the historical element of the Association, which has been established since 1860. He mentioned how the main entrance of Palazzo Xara, a baroque palace located in the historic heart of Rabat can now be enjoyed throughout the year, as it is located in one of the busiest streets which lead to several historical places where tourists visit. He and the committee are looking forward to making this palace more enjoyable for the general public.
