Arsenal humiliate Spurs, seasons head in opposite direction

-

However bad things have seemed for Arsenal over the last decade, beating Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium can usually be relied on.

Just not usually as emphatically as Sunday's north London derby triumph — a 3-1 victory helping to clear the early-season gloom for Mikel Arteta's side.

Never before in the Premier League has Arsenal scored three goals as quickly in a derby.

The goals inside the opening 34 minutes from Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka rattled Tottenham and gave Arsenal fans an afternoon of gloating in the late September sun.

It was a month ago as August was drawing to a close that Arsenal had opened the season with three losses — including at defending champion Manchester City — without scoring while Tottenham was top with a perfect start. The captain wanted to put things right.

The only thing consistent this month for Tottenham has been losing all three games and conceding three in each. Arsenal, meanwhile, has won all three games since the international break. But in a sign of recent inferiority for the neighbors, they aren't challenging at the top but midtable with Arsenal 10th on goal difference and Tottenham 11th in the standings.

Spurs haven't won at Arsenal in the league since 2010, and they did everything to ensure that dismal run wouldn't end.

Just look at how much space was gifted to Arsenal to launch the attack that ended in the opening goal in the 12th minute.

Smith Rowe wasn't tracked by the visitors as he found space in the penalty area to get on the end of Saka's cross, evading a futile late tackle by Davinson Sanchez to net. Arteta will be feeling relieved.

A couple of months into the job, Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo was unable to have any impact in preventing this humiliation. Not even Harry Kane, stopped from joining Manchester City, could come to the rescue.

In fact, the striker managed to give away the ball inside Tottenham's half to Thomas Partey that led to Arsenal scoring again on the break.

Kane did try to recover the situation as Arsenal advanced, but his tackle on Saka could not prevent him from getting the shot away to add the third.

Although Son Heung-min turned in a cross from Sergio Reguilon in the 79th, there would be no late Tottenham comeback. Especially not after Lucas Moura had a strike tipped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Dybala off injured as Juventus labors to 3-2 win over Samp

Paulo Dybala left the field in tears shortly after scoring to set Juventus on the way to a 3-2 victory over Sampdoria in Serie A on Sunday.

Dybala has endured a number of muscular injuries over the years and it appeared as if he had suffered another one after pulling up suddenly. The Juventus forward was able to walk off and was consoled by his teammates as he did so but will miss Wednesday's Champions League match against Chelsea.

Leonardo Bonucci converted a penalty and Manuel Locatelli scored his first goal for Juventus. Maya Yoshida and Antonio Candreva kept the match alive for Sampdoria.

It was an unconvincing win for Juve and only its second of the season. It lifted the Bianconeri up to ninth, eight points behind Serie A leader AC Milan. Napoli can move two points above Milan if it maintains its perfect record with a win at home to Cagliari later Sunday

In Turin, Juventus was keen to build on its first win midweek and it started brightly.

Dybala gave it the lead with a delightful strike into the bottom right corner from outside the area in the 10th minute and the Bianconeri could have extended their lead before the 27-year-old was forced off after pulling up injured, clutching the back of his leg.

The tempo fell after that but Bonucci drilled a powerful penalty into the bottom left corner two minutes from the break to double Juve's lead after a handball from Nicola Murru. It was a first penalty in Serie A for Bonucci, who has taken spot kicks for Italy.

But Sampdoria pulled one back a minute later. Mattia Perin did well to parry Fabio Quagliarella's effort but the resulting corner was taken short and Candreva whipped in a cross for Yoshida to head into the far side of the net.

Juventus restored its two-goal advantage 12 minutes into the second half. Locatelli started and finished the move after great work by Federico Chiesa and Dejan Kulusevski.

Candreva scored for Samp seven minutes from time to set up a nervy finale for Juve.

Tears as Freiburg wins its last game at Black Forest stadium

Freiburg coach Christian Streich shed tears and joined fans in the stand after his team beat Augsburg 3-0 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

It was Freiburg's last game in the scenic Dreisamstadion with its Black Forest views, which the club had been enjoying since 1954. The club's senior team is moving after the international break to a new, bigger stadium on the other side of the city.

The 56-year-old Streich — the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga — joined supporters after the game. First, he put on a protective face mask, then he grabbed a megaphone, and he climbed a barrier to access the stand behind one of the goals, where he led supporters' chants in front of his team sitting on the field.

Streich had beer stains on the front of his jumper when he returned to the field.

Streich's players attacked from the start against Augsburg, forcing an early corner, before Lukas Kübler opened the scoring in the sixth minute. Kübler scored off a rebound after Rafa Gikiewicz saved Günter's initial shot.

Lucas Höler lifted the ball over Gikiewicz for Freiburg's second in the 25th, and Vincenzo Grifo converted a penalty for 3-0 in the 31st. It was the 999th goal scored in 360 Bundesliga games at the stadium. And the last.

Streich took over after the final whistle before supporters enjoyed a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone." Former Freiburg coach Volker Finke, who led the club to its first Bundesliga promotion in 1993, and former German soccer federation president Fritz Keller were among those present.

Freiburg is one of only two unbeaten teams in the Bundesliga after six rounds. Bayern Munich, which stretched its lead at the top to three points over the weekend, is the other team.

Also Sunday, Bochum and Stuttgart drew 0-0 in the early game.

Fati scores in his triumphant return for Barcelona

Wearing the No. 10 jersey that used to belong to Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati made a triumphant return from a long injury layoff on Sunday, scoring a goal and giving Barcelona fans hope for the future.

Fati, who hadn't played in more than 10 months because of a knee injury, scored in stoppage time to seal a 3-0 Spanish league win over Levante that helped ease some of the pressure on Barcelona following a three-match winless streak.

The 18-year-old Fati was loudly cheered by the crowd at the Camp Nou Stadium when he entered the match in the 81st minute, then profusely celebrated after scoring with a low shot from outside the area.
