PSG win titans’ clash with Man City
Luis Suárez converted a stoppage-time penalty after Antoine Griezmann scored his first goal since returning to Atlético Madrid as the Spanish team fought back to beat 10-man AC Milan 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Griezmann leveled six minutes from time and Atlético was awarded a penalty that Suárez struck confidently down the middle.
Milan was forced to play for an hour with 10 men after midfielder Franck Kessié was sent off for a second bookable offense. That came shortly after Rafael Leão had given the Italian squad the lead in the 20th minute.
The Rossoneri fans were in fine voice and had plenty to cheer about as Milan got off to an aggressive start and Atlético struggled to deal with its opponent's energy and dynamism.
Brahim Díaz was at the heart of most of Milan's attacks and the young midfielder, who is on loan from Real Madrid, came close to giving the Rossoneri the lead in the 17th minute but fired straight at Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Ante Rebić went even closer two minutes later when he was sent clear by Díaz and had only the goalkeeper to beat but Oblak managed to push his effort wide.
Milan did take the lead moments later following another good move by Díaz, who then laid it off to Leão and the forward took one touch before driving it into the bottom left corner.
The closest Atlético came in the opening half hour was when former Inter Milan midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia blasted an effort high over the crossbar from a good position.
But disaster struck when Kessié received a somewhat harsh second booking and was sent off.
Milan almost doubled its lead in spectacular fashion as Leão attempted an overhead kick from distance and his effort crashed off the underside of the crossbar.
Atlético laid siege to the Milan goal and finally recorded its first shot on target 13 minutes from time when a Thomas Lemar snapshot from distance was beaten away by Mike Maignan.
And it took the lead shortly after as a cross was headed back across goal by Renan Lodi and Griezmann was there to volley it into the bottom left corner.
The comeback was complete when Pierre Kalulu was whistled for a handball and Suárez did the rest.
Messi scores superb 1st goal for PSG in 2-0 win against City
Lionel Messi's superb first goal for Paris Saint-Germain punished former coach Pep Guardiola's team as PSG beat Manchester City 2-0 in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday.
Messi charged toward the penalty area in the 74th minute and received a clever flick from Kylian Mbappe before curling a fine strike into the top right corner.
It was his first goal in four games
since a shock summer move from Barcelona, and the kind of goal he scored for fun playing under Guardiola there. The pair won the Champions League in 2009 and 2011, with the six-time Ballon d'Or winner scoring in both finals.
City had not lost its five previous meetings with PSG, winning 2-1 in Paris and 2-0 at home in last
season's semifinals before losing to Chelsea in the final.
PSG started its dream attack of Messi, Neymar and Mbappe, but it was unheralded midfielder Idrissa Gueye who opened the scoring in the eighth minute.
He thumped the ball into the top corner after Neymar's scuffed shot fell to him just inside the penalty area following Mbappe's cross from the right.
PSG's glittering attack looked flat, as it did in a 1-1 draw against Club Brugge. Neymar shot into the side netting midway through the second half, with Mbappe in a better position.
Then Messi lit up Parc des Princes with a glimpse of things to come, at the stadium where he scored his last Champions League goal for Barcelona last season.
Newcomer Sheriff stuns Madrid 2-1 in Champions League
Sébastien Thill scored a 90thminute winner as Moldovan club Sheriff stunned Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Tuesday to continue its strong start to its first Champions League campaign.
Thill netted with a powerful shot into the top corner from the edge of the area to give newcomer Sheriff its second consecutive victory. It leads Group D with six points, three more than Madrid and five more than both Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan, which drew 0-0 in Ukraine in the other group match.
The visitors had rarely threatened until opening the scoring after a breakaway in the 25th, with Jasurbek Yakhshiboev finding the far corner with a firm header past Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Benzema equalized from the penalty spot after a controversial foul on Vinícius Júnior as he tried to get past a defender inside the area. The referee initially let play continue but awarded the penalty after checking the video review.
Less than 10 minutes later, Sheriff had a potential winner by substitute Bruno called back for offside, but Thill still secured the victory near the end with a firsttimer that hit the upper corner of the net.
Dortmund beats Sporting Lisbon despite missing Haaland
Donyell Malen scored the winner as injury-hit Borussia Dortmund beat Sporting Lisbon 1-0 on Tuesday to strengthen its bid to qualify from its Champions League group.
Dortmund began the game without star striker Erling Haaland, who watched from the stands with a muscle problem, and other injured players including defensive midfielder Emre Can and American forward Gio Reyna.
Dortmund's Jude Bellingham became the youngest player with 10 Champions League starts at the age of 18 years, 91 days. The England midfielder marked the occasion with a fine through ball for Malen to score in the 37th minute with a well-placed shot into the far corner. It was the Dutch forward's first goal since joining Dortmund in the offseason.
Brugge beats Leipzig to increase pressure on coach Marsch
Club Brugge beat Leipzig 2-1 Tuesday to inflict a second Champions League defeat on the German club and increase the pressure on new coach Jesse Marsch.
Brugge followed up its unlikely draw with Paris Saint-Germain last month with an unexpected win on the road thanks to goal from Hans Vanaken and Mats Rits after Christopher Nkunku's opening goal for Leipzig.
Marsch replaced Julian Nagelsmann at Leipzig in the summer when Nagelsmann joined Bayern and the American has struggled to match his predecessor's success at the club.
