Local councils attend conference aimed to foster ties with EU
Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli addressed a conference aimed at elected members of local councils regarding the European Commission project ‘Building Europe with Local Councillors’ (BELC).
The project offers affiliation opportunities for European politicians elected at the local level, with the aim of creating a strong alliance between the institutions of the European Union and local governments.
Zerafa-Civelli said that “the alliance between Maltese and Gozitan mayors and councillors with their European counterparts can be an additional and robust tool for improving the effectiveness of local council management.”
“When we build relationships with European member states, we encourage the possibility of sharing knowledge so that together we can find solutions to address common challenges, while promoting collaborations and ideas around different European municipalities and localities,” continued Zerafa Civelli.
This conference was also addressed by the Deputy Director of the European Commission responsible for communication networks in member states, Alessandro Giordani, who gave a presentation on the importance of the alliance between local government politicians in Europe.
During the conference, the European Documentation Centre and the three Europe Direct Centres in Malta and Gozo, which communicate with citizens on European Union matters, also gave a presentation.
Present at this conference were several mayors and councilors of local councils and presidents of regional councils.
