‘Passing Through’ a solo exhibition in Rabat

-

Passing Through is Xaxa Calleja’s sixth solo exhibition. Our existence is moment to moment and she is trying to capture a moment in time in her paintings before that moment disappears before her eyes. She is trying to portray the intensity of her feelings in the works before that feeling fades away.

Thematically the paintings fall naturally into a group of three. The first group are studies of heads capturing snippets or impressions of people or objects that have left a mark with her. The second group are landscapes or floral arrangements. These scenes are portraying a moment where she was fully engaged with the landscape or the floral arrangement that she was witnessing. The landscapes are mostly executed in blue and are remnants of summer and the sea. And the third group are abstract works which are mostly an exploration of a mood or a feeling that she felt.

We are but vessels in this existence we call life for a moment in time before it all slips away. Leaving but a name. Life is so fragile and can be lost in a moment yet we sometimes act as if we are going to be here for an eternity not realising that the moment is all that we truly have. Perhaps these paintings are her way of defying this feeling and hopefully create something that will last.

The exhibition will be open daily from April 29th- May 7th at the Volunteer Centre, Bartolomew Street, Rabat, Part of the proceeds of the sales of works will be donated to Puttinu Cares. For further details contact xaxart@gmail.com and www.xaxacalleja.com
