Partnership between Special Olympics Malta and Aġenzija Sapport creates new sports opportunities
A new collaboration agreement between Aġenzija Sapport and Special Olympics Malta is set to offer new opportunities in sports for persons with disabilities, the government announced.
The agreement will enable persons with severe disabilities to benefit from the Motor Activity Training Programme (MATP) leading to the Special Olympics. The programme provides professional and specialized training in various sports disciplines.
It was signed for a period of two years, for 2023-2024.
The agreement strengthens the collaboration between Aġenzija Sapport and Special Olympics Malta, which has been ongoing for two years and has seen people with disabilities participating successfully in the Special Olympics Invitational Games held in May 2022, the statement said.
Aġenzija Sapport is expected to work closely with Special Olympics Malta in organizing tournaments every year, identifying employees to attend training programmes organized by Special Olympics Malta, and providing facilities for training sessions in their centres outside normal operating hours.
Minister for Inclusion, Volunteering and Consumer Rights Julia Farrugia Portelli said that the agreement is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to promoting inclusion through sports. She praised the work done by both organizations in this project, adding that this will create opportunities for athletes with disabilities to participate in games and tournaments.
Aġenzija Sapport CEO Oliver Scicluna said that the collaboration with Special Olympics Malta focuses on two key pillars, which are providing more opportunities for people with disabilities to be included in their communities through training that enhances their skills and to compete at local and international levels.
President of Special Olympics Malta Lydia Abela said that the joint work will recognize the achievements of everyone according to clear principles in favour of inclusivity. She referred to the successes of athletes who participated in the Special Olympics Invitational Games held in Malta last year and how sports can be another important tool for improving the quality of life for people with disabilities.
Director of Special Olympics Malta Anna Calleja said that through this agreement, more people can be included and provided with more inclusive opportunities in sports.
