Żurrieq parish church restored at a cost of €81,000

Restoration work on the Żurrieq Parish Church has been completed at a cost of €81,000, with 80% of the funds coming from European sources and the remaining 20% being covered by the parish.

The project was inaugurated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea Curmi and Parliamentary Secretary for EU Funds Chris Bonett, in the presence of Archpriest Dun Daniel Cardona and Administrative Secretary of the Archdiocese Michael Pace Ross.

The project took around ten months to complete and involved the restoration of the exterior facade, including the lantern and window openings. The external lighting system was also replaced with a modern system, designed to enhance the characteristic features of the Church dedicated to Saint Catherine.

Bonett said that the European Regional Development Fund is investing four million euros to be used by the Archdiocese of Malta to carry out restoration projects on 33 churches in Malta. The aim of these projects is to conserve, protect, and promote the ecclesiastical cultural heritage of the country.

“This is another investment that is being carried out with European funds that will help the Parish of Żurrieq carry out this project so that we can continue to restore our cultural heritage,” said Bonett.

Galea Curmi expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the restoration project.

“The Church in Malta has a commitment to preserve and protect its heritage. We do this with justice to our ancestors who left us this legacy out of love for the Church, to serve today’s society, and for future generations to enjoy what is beautiful and precious.
