Heritage Malta’s harbour cruises for this summer will trace the history of the Great Siege of Malta and of World War II, also known as the Second Great Siege of Malta.

The first cruise is planned for the 8th of June, which is World Ocean Day. The cruise, dedicated solely to World War II, will be a historical journey through the harbours flanking Valletta, which were the main target of the Axis air raids during the war.

Matthew Balzan, Heritage Malta’s Senior Curator for Fortifications, will give a detailed explanation of the dramatic events that had transformed the area between 1940 and 1943, while Prof. Timmy Gambin, who heads Heritage Malta’s Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit, will shed light on the underwater heritage that studs the seabed as a consequence of the war.

Another two cruises will take place on the 18th and 20th of July. Both cruises will immerse participants in the turbulent history of the Great Siege of Malta during the summer of 1565. Heritage Malta’s knowledgeable guides will recount some of the harshest battles, and highlight strategic buildings and areas in the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour which were instrumental for the final victory.

Tickets for each cruise are priced at €17 for adults, €15 for seniors and students, and €10 for children up to 11 years old. Heritage Malta members can buy their tickets at a discounted rate of €10, but need to present their membership card on the day. Tickets may be bought online from : or by going personally to any Heritage Malta museum or site.
