-

A teenage woman died in a traffic accident on the Central Link road in Attard early on Sunday, police said.

The woman, aged 17, was riding as a passenger in a Chevrolet Aveo whose driver lost control and crashed into a wall and a pole at 3am in Tumas Chetcuti Street, the police said in a statement.

The woman, who is from St Paul’s Bay and who was later identified on social media as Kacey Sciberras, died at the scene.

Another 17-year-old woman, from Attard, and the driver, a 20year-old man from St Paul’s Bay, were both taken to hospital.

The police said they suffered grievous injuries.

Condolences for Sciberras were quick to spread on social media.

The Institute of Tourism Studies, where Sciberras was a student as well as a member of the student council, was among those to offer condolences.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Kacey’s family and friends during this difficult time. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers,” the institute said.

“May we honour Kacey’s memory by cherishing the impact she made on those around her and embracing unity and compassion. She will forever hold a special place in our hearts,” it added.

The Committee of the Feast of Mary Queen of the Martyrs in St Paul’s Bay – Sciberras’ home town, where she was an active member of the youth committee, also offered their condolences.

They also appealed for prayers for another individual who is part of the same committee, who is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit following the same accident.

A magisterial inquiry led by

Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo is under way.

The teenager becomes the eighth traffic victim this year, the fourth this month, after two motorcyclists were killed in Mosta, and another motorcyclist – Rupert Tabone – was killed in an accident on the Birkirkara bypass the weekend before last.
