Tottenham and Bayern to contest 2024 VisitMalta Cup in London

- DOMENIC AQUILINA

The Malta Tourism Authority of‐ ficially announced that the 2024 VisitMalta Cup event will be con‐ tested by Tottenham Hotspur and six‐time European champions FC Bayern Munich at Tottenham Hot‐ spur Stadium on Saturday 10 Au‐ gust, 5.30pm kick‐off.

This mouth‐watering new sea‐ son curtain‐raiser brings on added interest, with Spurs all‐ time leading goalscorer, Harry Kane, and long‐serving defender Eric Dier now both forming part of the former Bundesliga champions squad.

This will be the 12th meeting be‐ tween these two football giants and only the fourth to be played in London. Tottenham Hotspur beat Bayern on their way to UEFA Cup success 40 years ago and last met in the UEFA Champions League during the 2019/20 season, with the Bundesliga club overwhelm‐ ingly getting the better of the Pre‐ mier League side.

The Hon. Clayton Bartolo, Minis‐ ter for Tourism and Public Clean‐ liness, together with Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, and Tottenham Hot‐ spurs club Ambassadors Osvaldo Ardiles, Ledley King, and Gary Mabbutt were present for the of‐ ficial launch of the forthcoming event.

Former Spurs glory, Argentine Osvaldo Ardiles was upbeat about such an event "I think this match is going to be absolutely great ‐ great idea, very original idea as well. The Malta Tourism Author‐ ity will be sponsoring this big match with the association of Tot‐ tenham Hotspur. The game will be broadcast live on television so I expect an enormous amount of coverage. From out point of view, as club Ambassadors, we are de‐ lighted to be here in Malta, ab‐ solutely always so beautiful (I have been here twice), the weather, the people, everything absolutely beautiful and I hope you will be inviting us again"

From his side, Carlo Micallef, Malta Tourism Authority CEO also

commented about the important of the match and promoting Malta yet again in the global sporting arena. "A big opportunity for Vis‐ itMalta to be able to do a different way of marketing together with two big football clubs like Totten‐ ham Hotspur and Bayern Munich, which are important brands in the football world, in order to pro‐ mote our country around the world, especially the two coun‐ tries where these two big clubs come from, England and Ger‐ many, two countries where we get tourism from, all around the year. This is an opportunity that we open a new way of exposure for VisitMalta, in a different way, tar‐ geting audiences which we nor‐ mally do not reach"
