Cycling – Road Race National Championsh­ip

James Mifsud and Marie Claire Aquilina crowned as new champions

The National Time Trial Championsh­ip 2016 organised by the Malta Cycling Federation crowned a new champion this year.

In the Elite category, James Mifsud of Team Greens CC had the great satisfacti­on of becoming the champion for the first time finishing with a total of 575 points, from two wins at Mriehel Bypass and il-Mizieb and second place at the Coast road. Two cyclists from the Agones SFc finished second and third respective­ly, Mark Bonnici with 435 points and Steve Sciberras with 415 points.

Marie Claire Aquilina of The Cyclist CC gained another title when she won the championsh­ip with 575 points, two wins at the Coast road and Mriehel bypass and second place at il-Mizieb. Promising Marion Pullicino of Agones SFc finished second overall with 550 points, while Gozitan Felicienne Mercieca finished third with 310 points.

Kurt Muscat of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC won the Junior Championsh­ip with a total of 575 points obtained from his two wins at the Coast road and Mriehel bypass and second place at il-Mizieb. Isaac Spiteri of Agones SFc finished second with 450 points, while Gozitan Brandon Sultana of Gozo Greyhound CC finished third with 375 points.

The Masters 40+ category was won by Michael Camilleri of Team Greens CC with 550 points obtained from a win at Mriehel bypass and two second places at the Coast road and at il-Mizieb. Ivan Zammit of Birkirkara St Joseph SC finished in second place with 480 points and Colin Tabone of Team Greens CC finished in third with 365 points.

The 50+ Masters Championsh­ip saw the success of Nicky Farrugia of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC with 575 points gained from two wins at the Coast road and the Mriehel bypass and second place at ilMizieb. Teammate Michael Lia finished second with 550 points, with Joe Mallia of Qormi CC finishing in third position with 155 points. Emmanuel Camilleri of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC won the Masters Championsh­ip 60+ with a maximum of 600 points winning all three races.

The Championsh­ips for the Under 15s, which were both won by cyclists from Mosta AF Sign Studio CC, were Veronique Pace Asciak, who obtained a maximum of 600 points and Debora Desira with 350 points. Meanwhile, Julian Gauci ended as champion in his category with 575 points, 25 points ahead of teammate James Galea. Third place was another cyclist of Mosta AF Sign Studio CC, Gianluca Camilleri with 435 points.
