Russian Virtuosi of Europe
29 April at 8pm – Our Lady of Victory Church, Valletta
The violinist Yuri Zhislin directs the ensemble from the leader’s desk, just as Neville Marriner used to do in those early days. And the instrumental forces – five first violins, five second violins, four violas, four cellos and one double bass – plus the exceptional skills of the players, also recalls the past glories of the Academy in music of course that they themselves played: two of Tchaikovsky’s finest string pieces, the Serenade for Strings, and the orchestral version of the sextet Souvenir de Florence.
The programme will include Edward Elgar – Serenade for Strings op.20; Arnold Schoenberg – Verklärte Nacht op.4 and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Serenade for Strings op. 48.
Tickets cost €20. Part of the takings from this concert are generously being devolved to the restoration of the façade and bells of Our Lady of Victory Church.
