A treat for aviation enthusiasts: MIA opens its revamped observation deck
Malta International Airport has just reopened its observation deck to the public, following its temporary closure to allow for a thorough revamp of both the space itself and the experience provided.
Located on level 3 of the terminal, the observation deck is a unique spot from where plane spotters can take in unparalleled views of the bustling runway backdropped by the airport’s neighbouring villages.
A number of installations along the corridor leading to the deck take visitors on an immersive journey through Malta International Airport’s history, and furnish aviation enthusiasts with some very interesting facts and figures. Extra effort was put into presenting the information in a colourful way that makes it appealing and accessible even to younger audiences.
“For the past months, people have regularly asked us when they could expect the observation deck to be reopened, making us realise more than ever that this is a very important area within our terminal, especially to locals and families. We sincerely hope that the spruced-up space will live up to the public’s expectations, and contribute to the enhanced experience we always strive to give, not only to
our travelling guests but also to the airport’s visitors,” said Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg.
The deck provides a great outdoor space where visitors can sit back and enjoy the balmy summer evenings and spectacular runway action against the Maltese skyline. The deck has also been kitted out with custom-designed canopies that create a similar effect to the shade produced by foliage and tree branches.
The observation deck’s facelift forms part of the first phase of Malta International Airport’s reconfiguration project, through which €12 million are being invested in various upgrades across the terminal. Works on this project were kicked off in September 2016 and are expected to be completed before summer 2018.
Access to the observation deck is free of charge and open on a 24/7 basis.
