Launch of Junior College Prospectus 2017/2018

-

The University of Malta Junior College Prospectus for 2017/2018 was launched at an event attended by the Minister for Education and Employment, Evarist Bartolo, the Pro-Rector for Students and Staff Affairs and Outreach, Dr Carmen Sammut, the Chairman of the Junior College Board, Prof. Emmanuel Sinagra, and Paul Xuereb, Principal, Junior College.

A presentation to members of the media included an overview of the Junior College and the facilities it offers students, an explanation of the application process and information about the compilation of the prospectus itself.

The Junior College forms an integral part of the University of Malta. It offers a unique learning experience to students that is spread over two years, bridging the gap between secondary and higher education.

New conditions that have been introduced are intended to further encourage students to continue with their education. Applicants may be admitted to the College if they are in possession of six passes at SEC level or equivalent – Maltese, English, Mathematics, a science subject, and two other subjects. For the first time, the two other subjects may be vocational subjects at SEC level.

Students who would like to repeat their first year or second year at Junior College, (even if they used to attend a different institution) may apply to join the College. In excep- tional circumstances, students who, for a number of reasons, find it difficult to complete the course within two years, may follow the course over a longer period. Moreover, students who must suspend their studies, for valid extraordinary reasons, are now given the opportunity to restart the following year without being considered as repeaters.

Students, who are not eligible to proceed with their studies, may now repeat their first year once and may also repeat their second year once. In previous years, students could repeat a year once only.

Biology, English and Pure Mathematics seem to be the most popular subjects studied at A level, while English, Philosophy and Physics are the main subjects chosen at intermediate level.

Qualified students and those awaiting results, including SEC September sessions, may apply at www.jc.um.edu.mt/apply between Tuesday 1 August and Tuesday 8 August 2017.

The Junior College Prospectus includes all the information necessary for students to choose their subjects and apply. It gives details of facilities and resources, and serves as a guide for students during their time at the College.

The prospectus will be made available online as from today. www.jc.um.edu.mt
