Lino Buttigieg Prize for 2017 awarded

-

Mariestell Dalli has won the Lino Buttigieg Prize for 2017. Ms Dalli obtained the highest score in the IFSP Foundation Certificate in Trusts Law and Management examination held on 1 July. She obtained an impressive 87.5% for her answers to the varied questions, covering a broad range of issues related to the practice as well as the theory behind trusts that are posed in the paper. Ms Dalli received a copy of the book The International Trust, edited by Justice David Hayton.

Ms Dalli, who graduated with Bachelor of Accountancy degree from the University of Malta in 2006, has been a manager with Alter Domus since June 2017, just weeks before sitting the examination. She had joined Alter Domus in 2016 after a period at the Ministry of Finance following five years at PriceWaterhouseCoopers after her graduation in 2006.

The Lino Buttigieg Prize is awarded by the IFSP to the student who achieves the top grade in the IFSP Foundation Certificate in Trusts Law and Management exam. The IFSP Council set up the Prize to honour the memory of Lino Buttigieg, who as a member of the IFSP Council and chair of the IFSP’s education subcommittee, was instrumental in first establishing the course in 2003.

So far, the IFSP has prepared more than 900 people in the essentials of trusts, through a certificate course recognized and endorsed by the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the leading international professional organization in the field.

When the course was first offered in 2003, the Trusts and Trustees Act was about to become law, and with it trusts were to enter list of Maltese institutions available for use. Mr Buttigieg had the foresight to see that, in order to make use of the new law, practitioners needed to be have some preparation. In fact, for a number of years the IFSP course was the only preparation available for practitioners seeking to understand and use trusts.

The 15th Foundation Certificate in Trusts Law and Management course will start towards the end of the first quarter of 2018. Registrations will open in early December: anyone interested should visit the IFSP website at www.ifsp.org.mt for further information.
