International agencies accredit the B.Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering degree programme offered by University of Malta

-

The University of Malta’s Faculty of Engineering has sought accreditation for the B.Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering by the Engineering Council UK and the European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education.

The course programme was found to meet the international requirements, specifically including the following key engineering pillars: underpinning science and mathematics, engineering analysis and design, engineering practice, as well as economic, social, environment and transferable skills. The programme was thus granted the EUR-ACE label effectively leading its graduates to the Eur. Ing. title.

Furthermore, the B.Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering course programme was also accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects on behalf of the Engineering Council UK

Thus, engineers graduating in Mechanical Engineering are now considered to fully meet the academic requirements necessary for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and also partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

This is of very high value for the Faculty’s students, especially in view of the fact that the IEng is usually associated with the first cycle degree courses in the UK, while the CEng is usually associated with second cycle (post-graduate) courses.

The Engineering Council UK also forms part of the Washington, Sydney Accord that incorporates an international agreement between various international bodies responsible for accrediting Engineering degree programmes. Therefore, the B.Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, offered by the Faculty of Engineering in Malta, is also recognised in Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong China, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Turkey, United States and Pakistan.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta offers a number of degree programmes related to engineering. Since their inception, more than 50 years ago, the course programmes offered by the Faculty of Engineering have provided its graduates with the knowledge, skills, experience, intellectual abilities and understanding of the engineering profession, together with a sound mathematical theoretical background.

The various degree programmes cover a wide variety of essential engineering aspects such as engineering analysis methods and tools, design and development of processes, systems, services and products, engineering practice through hands-on individual and group assignments.

Studies also help candidates develop skills such as management, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, which are required to develop a versatile engineer who meets the demands of the local industries, while being in line with international European Engineering requirements.

The course progammes have been accredited by the National Commission for Higher Education as being MQF level 6 programmes and are recognised by the Malta Engineering Profession Board as a prerequisite for a candidate to be eligible for the local Engineering Warrant (Ing). These two course programmes have also been listed on the European Federation of National Engineering Associations index for many years.

Through the new accreditation attained for the degree programme offered by the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Malta demonstrates its commitment to provide quality education and internationally-recognised programmes. This is continually being strengthened through the implementation of accreditation processes, further enhancing the quality of the education provided.

Candidates graduating from the University of Malta’s Faculty of Engineering have found employment in various industrial fields such as aerospace engineering, automotive engineering, maritime engineering, materials engineering and manufacturing engineering.
