Women work more, earn less

The Malta Institute of Accountants focuses on women

-

Women, on average, work six hours longer per week than men but have fewer paid hours. President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca quoted the figures in her address at a conference organised by the Malta Institute of Accountants marking Women’s Day 2018.

The President pointed to a European Commission report which shows that women across the European Union are a long way off from achieving full economic independence. “In comparison to men, women tend to be employed less; they are employed in lower-paid sectors; and, in addition, face fewer and slower promotions,” added the President.

The conference, ‘Inspire to Achieve’, was the first dedicated to women and drew the participation of leading and inspiring women who shared their achievements and vision with the attendees. Ms Maria Cauchi Delia, CEO of the Institute of Accountants said that the organisation will press for progress by investigating the issue of pay gap, establishing clear criteria to foster achievements, and develop methods for creating further participation.

‘Inspire to Achieve’ offered the opportunity for the Institute of Accountants to formally launch a study into gender disparity. Conducted by MISCO, the study will focus on gender-based pay gap within the accounting profession.

MIA President, Mr William Spiteri Bailey, expressed concern that notwithstanding the enormous changes in the rate of employment, the highest positions within companies are still elusive for women. He said that the Institute of Accountants is committed to keep building on the values of equality, empowerment, and achieving.

The Council of MIA presented tokens of recognition to President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, and to Christabelle Borg, a talented singer and member of the Institute as a qualified accountant.
