BOV renews its appointment for Earth Hour

-

Last Saturday, Bank of Valletta joined other organisations around the Maltese islands that switched off their lights symbolically at 8.30pm to create greater awareness about the importance of safeguarding our environment.

Now celebrated in over 180 countries, this year’s edition of WWF will be highlighting the environment issues most relevant in their country. As announced by Minister Jose Herrera earlier last week, the theme chosen for this year is Let nature shine and the activities planned for Saturday put the spotlight on Malta’s biodiversity and nature.

On Saturday, Bank of Valletta symbolically switched off the lights on the façade of its BOV Centre in Sta Venera as well as that of its branch in Republic Street, Valletta and its International Corporate Centre in Zachary Street, Valletta. In addition, the bank gave its support towards the activities being organised on Saturday by the Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change for the Earth Hour celebrations.

“Earth Hour is an opportunity to create greater collective consciousness about the importance of safeguarding our environment. As a bank, our commitment goes deeper than a symbolic gesture. In fact, we consider the green stakeholder at par with the other stakeholder groups and controlling the impact of our carbon footprint is an integral part of our corporate responsibility,” explained Charles Azzopardi, executive PR & Marketing at Bank of Valletta.

As part of its green agenda, the bank has equipped the premises across its network with intelligent LED lighting systems that reduce unnecessary lights, along with double-glazed windows that lessen reliance on heating and cooling energies by maximizing temperature retention. Over the past years, the bank has also implemented a comprehensive water-saving programme aimed at reducing water consumption. The amount of rain water that is typically harvested by the rainwater harvesting system at BOV is 1,460 cubic metres a year.

WWF launched Earth Hour in 2007 as a grass root movement that celebrates its commitment to protect the planet by switching off lights for one designated hour.
