MCAST celebrates the graduation of students that successfully completed the Higher Diploma in Physiological Measurement
MCAST celebrated the graduation of 25 students who successfully completed the Higher Diploma in Physiological Measurement (Level 5). The ceremony took place at MCAST Main Hall, Main Campus on Thursday, 26 April in the presence of Dr Christopher Fearne, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Dr Silvio De Bono, president of the MCAST Board of Governors.
As part of the commitment of the Ministry for Health to sustain and improve service delivery and in line with the Sectoral Agreement signed in 2017 between MFH and MUMN, ECG technicians were supported and funded in their professional development.
In 2016, MCAST together with the Directorate of Allied Health Services embarked on this training initiative to upgrade the training of ECG technicians within their service remit in respiratory, cardiac and neurophysiology specialised areas.
The design and development of this programme was a joint venture undertaken by MCAST and the Directorate Allied Health Care Services. The course content included an understanding of general physiological measurement principles and the techniques and related technologies; the integration of knowledge of various clinical tests to recognise clinical cases involving several body systems; the application of suitable approaches and intervention strategies that support patients and work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team using codes of practice and the knowledge of standard operating procedures and legislation within the health sector.
The modules covered in this course were varied and included Research, the Role of Public Health in Health and Social Care, Physiological Principles (specification from cardiology, respiratory and neuro science), Human Health & Nutrition, Infectious Diseases, Neurophysiological and Homeostatic Control of the Human Body. The Diploma in Physiological Measurements not only affords diverse career prospects with significant opportunities for the staff, but also ensures a high quality of health care services being offered to the general public.
This course was carried out through MCAST’s commercial arm, the MCAST Gateway to Industry (MG2I) which was conceived to support, enhance and complement the College’s operation. Focusing on training provision and maintaining the impetus on part-time course provision, MCAST’s commercial enterprise has given the opportunity to thousands of people to follow courses for leisure as well as for the achievement of accredited qualifications at various MQF levels.
