Full steam ahead for Steam conference
On Saturday, 14 July it will be full steam ahead for the Steam conference, as a host of international experts come to Malta to speak on topics ranging from traditional Scottish dance to stand-up comedy − all in the name of science communication.
This free event at the University of Malta Valletta campus will be a full day (9am to 6pm) jam-packed with engaging talks, workshops and networking opportunities, with speakers from over 10 countries around the globe.
Steam is an EU project with the aim of training young researchers and Stem educators in innovative science communication techniques by marrying Stem with the Arts.
2018 is a special year for Steam as the three-year project is being brought to a close. The conference will celebrate its achievements so far, while discussing the future of science communication through creative mediums.
The conference will feature keynote speakers including Dr Angelos Alexopoulos (CERN, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory), science education expert Prof. Ayelet Baram-Tsabari (Israel Institute of Technology) and lectur- er Dr David Kirby (University of Manchester), who authored the book Lab Coats in Hollywood: Science, Scientists and Cinema. The programme of workshops throughout the day will see participants exploring the use of digital games, creative arts and traditional Scottish dance to communicate science.
Tomorrow there will be a seminar for teachers where Steam education experts from around Europe will showcase some of their most innovative educational activities through concurrent workshops, giving attendees unique training in the delivery of creative Stem pedagogy. The project is led by the University of Malta (drafted by Dr Edward Duca) in collaboration with a consortium of six partners from around Europe. It is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union with support from the European Commission.
