WSC IT experts awarded BSc qualifications

Four WSC employees have been awarded BSc degrees in various IT fields, in line with their job expertise. William Sammut, Alexander Attard, Mark Sammut and Shaun Grima who work in the corporation’s Strategic Information Directorate obtained first-class grades in their respective fields which included networking and security, web development, data mining, business skills and project planning.

The WSC believes in investing in its human assets and helped the four through sponsorship and technical assistance. Apart from the academic skills and personal improvement achieved by the four, the WSC and in turn consumers will benefit from their enhanced skills.

Sammut based his thesis on programming, which will help when creating the many IT solutions that need to be created for corporate operations. Attard based his thesis on wireless security which is so important given the plethora of communications between the various WSC assets. Mark Sammut wrote his thesis on security and networking which again is directly tied to the high security required in WSC data communications while Grima based his thesis on customer relationship management web-based solutions which are fundamental to improved customer satisfaction and more efficient operations.

The WSC’s skilled technical experts integrate different technologies and software to increase operational efficiency. A prime example is the very important and extremely useful in-house designed solution where information about consumers’ own water consumption pattern over specific daily, weekly, monthly or yearly time periods is monitored and analysed. Automated processes check users’ consumption patterns for any possible internal leakages, in which case customers are notified accordingly.

This innovative solution has resulted in around 2,000 consumers being notified about possible unknown internal leaks on their premises. The subsequent repairs are calculated to have saved between 20 – 25 million litres of water per fortnight and many thousands of euros of customers’ money.
