A modern building and construction regulation framework
The Council of the Kamra tal-Periti presented its vision for A Modern Building and Construction Regulation Framework for Malta during an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 8 November.
The proposals presented by the Council were warmly welcomed by the numerous members of the profession who attended the event. Many expressed their concurrence with the proposal to update current practices and standards to meet the ever more complex requirements of the industry and to achieve positive change while ensuring higher quality buildings and spaces.
The General Meeting approved the principles of the framework presented by the Council and confirmed its support for the Council to commence discussions with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Planning and the Property Market and the working group which is putting together the framework for the establishment of the new Malta Building and Construction Authority, as well as other stakeholders, in order to present the profession’s view in this regard.
The Council of the Kamra tal-Periti has been calling for an updated suite of building regulations for a number of years, and recently welcomed the White Paper published by government, announcing the establishment of a new Authority to regulate the building and construction industry because it strongly believes that there is currently inadequate, or in many cases, no regulation of the building and construction processes, which is so vital to our industry; the little regulation that exists is outdated, fragmented and uncoordinated. This is to the detriment of the same industry, property owners and periti.
The Council of the Kamra tal-Periti will be meeting the various stakeholders in the coming weeks to present its position.
