46 engineers receive their warrant
Minister Ian Borg yesterday presented a warrant to 46 engineers. On this occasion, he stressed the responsibility that comes with this warrant and the ethics which bind the work of these professionals.
Minister Borg referred to the important ongoing revision on the legislation about the engineering profession that, since it has not been updated for a long time, does not reflect our present circumstances.
He also reminded those present of the great leap forward made regarding the MCAST course, where after an accurate revision of the engineering course, MCAST students who graduate in this course will also be eligible for the warrant.
This important step will also lead those who have already graduated in the same course but could never apply for the warrant and were therefore hindered from advancing in their profession and career, can now follow a short course in the same institution so that finally they too can be eligible for a warrant.
The minister stressed the importance of scrutinising available courses in any institution, as this profession is essential for the country’s development and requires constant updating to the highest standards.
The minister also spoke about the progress being made in the construction sector with the ongoing process towards the setting up of the Malta Construction and Building Authority, which will not only bring together the offices presently carrying out different roles related to the sector but will also update the existing fragmented legislation related to this industry.
Thanks to this development, said the minister, engineers will have a more active role both in the construction stage as well as throughout the lifetime of any building. He stressed the importance of engineers to ensure that a building is safe, sustainable and reaches the highest possible standards.
Chairman of the Board of Engineers Dr Noel Camilleri spoke about the importance of engineers for the country’s development. He explained how ethics should shape the career of every engineer and reminded all those who were receiving their warrant of the responsibility they would be carrying from this day forward.
